The Good Shepherd

A few weeks ago we were thinking about the names and titles of Jesus. Today we are looking at 'The Good Shepherd'.

Jesus said that people are like sheep and he is like a shepherd. He knows each one by name and cares and protects each one even if it means great danger and hardship for the shepherd. It matters if one sheep is in trouble, even though ninety-nine are safe. Christians believe that Jesus is like a shepherd, he cares for each person individually.

How could you look after and care for people in your class?

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you that you know each person by name and care for each one.

Amen.

Tuesday 13th July

Good Morning Everyone,

Today we will continue to think about the names and titles of Jesus.

Communicating without words

Work with a partner:

  1. Choose a pet from below. Do not tell your partner.

  2. Help your partner to guess the pet - you must not use words!

  3. You can act out, sign or draw on a whiteboard/piece of paper to help your partner guess

  4. Swap over

Was it easy or hard?

Communicating without words is not easy. It s much easier with words. A word is a way of getting something from one person's mind into another's. If I think of something and I want you to know what it is I tell you using words. I can either speak them or write them.

The Word

Christians call Jesus 'the Word' because he was the one who told people what God was like, what God felt and thought. Just as our words get information from one person to another so Jesus was like a word that told people about God.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you, Jesus, that you showed people what God was like. Teach us to control our own words and to realise what damage and what good they can do.

Amen.

Wednesday 14th July

Good Morning Everyone,

Can you remember some of the names and titles of Jesus that we have looked at already?

A man for all the people

Alphabet Game

What is the first letter of the alphabet?

1 Write down on your whiteboards (or try to remember) 7 words that begin with that letter. You can include proper nouns.

2. Turn to the person next to you. Compare whiteboards.

3. Cross out words that you have both written down and give yourself a point for every word that your partner does not have.

4. Show on your fingers how many points you have.

Now let’s do the same with the last letter of the alphabet. Can you write down 4 words that begin with that letter and repeat the game with your partner.

It’s a good game to play on train or car journey over the summer.

Alpha and the Omega

Jesus said he was the ‘alpha’ and the ‘omega’. These are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. That is the same as saying he was the A to Z, the beginning and the end.

Jesus did not mean he was a letter of the alphabet. He meant he was there at the beginning when the world was made, he is here now and he will be with us until the end of time. We are never alone, he is always there. Jesus is the A to Z, the beginning and the end of life.

Prayer

Thank you, Jesus , for always being there. During the day and through the night; you watch over us. We are never truly alone, you are always with us.

Amen.

Thursday 15th July

Hello, Cathedral School. It’s Father Andrew here from the Cathedral. It’s great to be leading worship with you today.

Hymn

Please join in singing this hymn about peace. I hope you enjoy it.

This term, we’re revisiting the Fruits of Friendship with God.

Peace

Today’s collective worship is all about peace.

Can you think of a time when you had an argument with a friend that was hard to resolve?

What happened? What did it feel like?

Sadly, all over the world, there are places where conflicts that are hard to resolve have led to wars.

Can you think of where in the world there are wars at the moment?

Whether an argument happens between two people or between countries, this is what we call a conflict. Having conflicts is part of being human. Having differences of opinion can sometimes help us to see something in a new light, or change a view that we have wrongly held, or to learn a lesson about something.

However, what is really important is the way in which a conflict is handled. If conflicts between large groups of people get out of hand, they can become bigger and bigger until they become wars. So, we have to manage conflict carefully, so that people who have different opinions can work peacefully together to understand each other better. This is called being a peacemaker. We should all try to be peacemakers.

Peace in The Bible

Jesus says many things about peace in the Bible. In the Gospel of Matthew, he says “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” and, in the Gospel of John, Jesus says that we will be happy if we care for each other in peace. All world religions value the importance of peace. When we disagree with someone, we should try to listen hard and to share our points of view in peace.

Being a peacemaker

Think today about how you can contribute to peace around the world. Maybe you could try harder to listen when someone has a different opinion to your own. Maybe you could walk away if you feel angry with someone. There are many little things that we can do to contribute to the peace of the world.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank you for helping us to make others feel better.

Help us to share our lives together in peace.

Help us to love and care for those who need us.

Help us to care for our families and friends.

Help us to play our part in bringing peace in the world.

Amen.
