This is a very general plan for the POC regarding triaging a Behavioural Emergency.
Calmly take person to quiet space if possible - Lounge etc. Make sure it is a place that can be seen but is away from the public. The key is breathing, quiet space, free from distractions etc
Call over another pastor or key volunteer to be a second person present.
Ask them if there is anyone you can call who is used to helping them. Ask them if there is anything you can do to help them settle (e.g. do they have any techniques you could encourage them in?)
The TLC person should decide on a course of action.
If the person is needing mental health support, ask them if there is anyone you can call, such as a family member or care/support worker for more information?
Ask them if you can help them find mental health services to help them? Be sensitive and discreet.
If the Behavioural Emergency becomes a Medical Emergency, call 000 and request medical assistance.
If the person becomes aggressive or violent, call 000 and request the police. Ask for the Security Team member to attend with you.
If the person is known to us:
Let them know that as a church we are here to support them.
That they are welcome at the church.
Ask what could be done to help them feel more comfortable in future attendance.
Ask a Demographic Pastor to follow up with phone call the next day, but do not promise this will happen.
If the person is not known to us:
Ask the person if they have a family member or friend that the church can liaise with.
If able to liaise with family, discuss strategies that the church can use to best facilitate and support attendee to attend services/events.
