Staff Survey Feedback - Morning Arrival

  • Make sure that the car line students are getting dropped off in the correct area

  • I would like to see the morning greeters maybe wearing a vest that distinguishes them from the rest of the students.

  • I like that the students enter in 1 door.

  • Please enforce no general education dropping off by DC and ECSE classrooms, either on the small street or on Pearl St. They stop traffic or drive faster than speed limit potentially causing harm to students. Could there be a staff member from front to come and stay in the back to stop this from happening? Staff for DC and ECSE cannot take time to stand out there and tell parents/guardians to move along or get in line.

  • I love that all students enter through the front doors.

  • It seems to be working great. I think having parents come in and sign kids who are late helps some with tardies.

  • It's going ok but the line does get backed up when parents want to park and then walk their students up to the door. When they pull out it slows down the flow of the line. I know you can't change that much but that is all I could think of for the morning arrival.

  • Hold students in gym/cafeteria until homeroom teacher picks them up.

  • We might need a campus expectation to be at school a little before 7:15. Many teachers arrive late on a regular basis. Feels like the same few who are here opening the school. There are some days I wonder why I rush to get here early when others are never there on time

  • I like the slow start of students coming in as they arrive/ finish breakfast. I would like to see our greeters and safety patrol doing more and sticking to it. Maybe changing those jobs more would help with that

  • suggest prek and k arrive at their respective areas as prek did before and kinder does now during dismissal to reduce congestion

Staff Survey Feedback - Dismissal

  • Continue with an adult monitoring the older siblings in the PK & Kinder wings.

  • Continue with adult monitoring of the older siblings in the Pre-K & Kinder areas.

  • The cards are great. It helps make sure kids go home with the correct adults. Having someone watch the older kids by prek daily help. On days where no one is monitoring we are having to stop rough housing and silliness. One of our assistants takes the van kids so now we have less eyes watching our class while we dismiss. If we continue to have these two things helps a lot.

  • I think dismissal is running a lot better this year, then previous years.

  • I love dismissal!

  • I think dismissal as gone smoothly on my end, but I am not sure about the others.

  • I think dismissal is good!

  • I like dismissal the way we do it. One improvement would be that we go back to having someone walk the walkers out at the end of the day when the bell rings. Holding on to them until the all call leads to behaviors which makes dismissal stressful when you are tired and just want to go home.

  • suggest prek dismiss from their respective area as prek did before and kinder does now to reduce congestion

Staff Survey Feedback - Lunch

  • I do love having one grade level in the cafeteria but I wonder if there would be a way each team could eat lunch together.

  • Pre-k lunch is good

  • Keep the same works great

  • Yes, eliminate it completely. It's a COMPLETE, UTTER WASTE OF TIME, ENERGY, AND TALENT to have hard working, educated, overburdened teachers stand there for 2 1/2 hours a week watching kids eat in the cafeteria or play on the playground when they could otherwise be getting their work done. We're not asking for leisure time; we're literally asking for the opportunity to be productive during that span of time. Cafeteria and recess duty are the antithesis of productivity.

  • 5th grade and Pre-K being together did not work, based on the behavior and noise level of the 5th graders.. Does our school have any paraprofessionals that are not assigned to a specific classroom? My old school had what we called "Building TAs" and they were specifically assigned: morning breakfast duty, recess duty, lunch duty, dismissal duty. I'm sure it is not in the budget, but that would be a neat idea: to have a person or two and those are their main responsibilities. Could parents volunteer for lunch duty? They could be consistently assigned a duty. For example: Parent A is assigned to 3rd and 4th grade lunches every Monday. There would also be a teacher assigned, but having a parent support could help.

  • I liked watching the grade level before you so that your team could all eat together and you got to know the students moving up

  • have the spec ed kiddos from hs program come do it like they used to: have 8th grade AVID kiddos from Perry come over and do it so no teachers have to do it and they can have lunch as a team

  • It would be nice for admin. to take a grade levels duty once a month or once a nine weeks so we can celebrate birthday's or just enjoy comradery of our team. If we have WIN teachers, they could be in the rotation too. I know they couldn't do it daily, but every once in a while would be lovely.

Staff Survey Feedback - Specials

  •  Having special education students come in earlier in the school year rather than later for specials. If assistance is needed, then more assistants will be needed to provide specials with support during specials time.

  • No, our specials teachers are great!

  • School counselors and school librarians should not be included in an electives rotation. Those two positions need to be readily available to tend to students' needs throughout the school day and not bogged down by teaching classes.

  • I don't think the counselor should be in the rotation of specials. I think she should be able to attend to students who need her at anytime of the day.

  • Better communications, things have been planned that we were not informed about and the constant mix up of where groups should be.

  • I think everyone would love one hour specials! haha. At my former school, we were able to accomplish one hour specials because the Pre-K students did not have specials with the specials teachers. Pre-K had specials with their paraprofessionals in the gym, music room, or art room. This would give the specials teachers that time for their planning.

  • PK - Most schools do 25-30 minutes at max with them, I wish we could do the same, 45 is too long.

  • I like having library and counselor as a part of the rotation because it builds it into the schedule without having to schedule an extra time but I don't feel like we are utilizing them in the best way. In the library they could be doing typing club, working on technology projects like researching something and making a PowerPoint, writing (typing) about a book she reads to them. This would support what we are doing in the classroom and better prepare the students for online testing. In counselor they could be doing restorative circles and given real, concrete ways to solve conflict. This is also where our community service learning could be done which is a part of LIM that we have yet to really incorporate.

  • remove prek from specials rotation or shorten their time allowing the aides to take them the other half of the time. hire an assistant for coach and remove counseling and library from specials rotation or make it like 2 weeks on 2 weeks off so there is less burn out from combining two jobs. perhaps have parent volunteers in gym or hs avid kiddos or hs sped kiddos or 8th grade perry footballers on rotation in the gym. student teacher perhaps.

  • Knowing at least a day before when kids need chromebooks.

Staff Survey Feedback - LiM

  • It is great

  • Our building needs to reflect that we are a Leader in Me School instead of a theme...our theme should be Leader in me, so when people walk in they can immediately see that we are a Leader in Me school! Leader in me everywhere.

  • possibly by posting offical leader in me visuals. Like the characters.

  • Accountability. Keep Action Team meetings throughout the year. Walkthroughs during Habit Huddle time to ensure all teachers are doing LIM lessons. Make time for students leadership opportunities besides student jobs.

  • I think the program has really taken off this year, but we need to keep the energy throughout the year.

  • We need more visuals so the students can own the program. Build student led committees.

  • Habit Huddle is good. Let's keep it at the same time next year.

  • More trainings on how to do it correctly. I feel like each year I get better at LIM and the lessons but I feel like a few more trainings would be helpful.

  • I think that having the counselor play a more active role in Leader in Me during Specials time. Since Leader in Me is a social/emotional program, if she could work it in to her counseling lessons it would be great.

  • More student led activities and clubs

  • I think that if we give teachers time at the beginning of the year to digest the material and actually do the 8 days we will be more successful in the long run.

  • Since we are a Leader in Me School we have to go by the leader in me beliefs.

  • Teachers need to be all in with the Leader In Me program and use that language all day in order to help guide students.

  • an admin over the intercom reminding students of the weekly focus to let the kiddos know that we are all in the LiM program from the top to the bottom would be nice. a morning greeting from admin

Staff Survey Feedback - What area of our school worked effectively?

  • From what I have seen so far, trust in teachers as professionals.

  • The hall pep rally's are a great school spirit builder!

  • ARDS run very well.

  • MM's in the morning

  • ECSE/Pre-K

  • After school clubs for students and student events!

  • Our sped team has been amazing this year! Their push in model has helped so many students.

  • Dismissal.

  • The flexibility for each grade level to set a rotation schedule that best suited their students' and teachers' needs was good. This autonomy is essential as there are too many varying degrees of necessary routines between our youngest learners and our oldest learners. Let's continue to keep this autonomy.

  • I think the morning reminders for the day are a great help in know what is happening that day and teachers that will be out. Also, I like knowing what events are coming up for the week so that I stay on top of everything.

  • Allowing teachers to be creative in their lessons.

  • Student academic growth

  • Caring for our students needs. Providing supplies, clothes, food. Teachers caring for their emotional needs, supporting them with love. Most teachers work their butts off to provide for the students, I see it and admire that.

  • I think that we have very qualified teachers that work very hard.

  • The front office staff is GREAT! I felt like this year there was constant communication with them, parents, and teacher. They were quick to rely any messages to me from parents. HUGE PROPS TO THEM!!! The volunteer part was also great!

  • parental inclusion was awesome this year. the ideas were fabulous

  • I love most everything about our school! We have fair leadership and a great culture!!!

  • I know this is minor, but I love the POTLUCK meals every month. :)

Staff Survey Feedback - An area that continues to be a hurdle?

  • Scheduling all services for students

  • Parent involvement

  • I don't have one.

  • How to consistently implement LIM in all grade levels.

  • Create a schoolwide behavior plan.Consistency and accountability.

  • Supporting our newcomers

  • WIN time this year was not as effective as last year. However, I think that we have some ideas to make it better next year.

  • Student needs and how to support them.

  • Special Education students growing/showing academic improvement.

  • Attendance

  • Consistency. Consistency in expectations, communication, discipline, accountability. We start off really strong at the beginning of the year and have all these great ideas and plans for the year but then we drop off as the year goes on. I'm guilty of this too and I don’t know what the solution is. I don’t want more meetings but I think that is what we need. I know you like to leave it up to us to make time for all the things but it isn't happening. If we want people to have accountability, meeting with others, and doing certain things then we need to be meeting and doing those things at a certain time together. I don’t know many of the new staff members and I know that some of my new teammates struggles with staying on top of all the things. There are so many unspoken things that teacher have to do and it is hard to keep up with all of them. I think we need to really work on our mentor program and foster these new team members so we don’t have as much turnover. I do think if we implement the house system next year and have all the teachers in a house it would help with some of these things and so things like friendly competitions would add to our community as a staff.

  •  I just believe that communication between grade levels, admin, and everyone involved in the lives of OUR students has to improve. We are all here for the good of the kids (I hope) so communication has to be a lot better.

  • collaboration, teacher involvement

  • Discipline help when it prohibits others from learning.

Staff Survey Feedback - Student Behavior

Rules for student behavior are consistently enforced by teachers in this school, even for students who are not in their classes - 69% Disciplinary practices are applied fairly to all students at my school.  67%  Why is this and what can we do to improve?

  • I'm not sure why that has happened if everyone follows the Leader in Me program this percentage should be higher.

  • Consistency in rules and expectations in the hallways. Being in 1st grade hallway, I see students running up and down the halls when no teachers are around. Some classes are able to be loud in the hallway while others are quiet with calm bodies.

  • posting rules and expectations school wide. Having school wide rules and expectations.

  • There is no plan in place for teachers to follow to consistently enforce behavior. A lot is left to "teacher discretion" which can be necessary for certain infractions, but more moderate to extreme behaviors that are being dealt with need to have a specific plan in order to follow.

  • Inconsistent expectations.

  • I think staff becomes of the "not my circus not my monkeys" mentality and doesn't want to step on each others toes. I don't know have any ideas on how this could be diminished currently.

  • All teachers need to come together to build a more structured discipline system for our school. This is an area that many teachers do not know how to navigate.

  • For the most part, we all hold our students to the same standard of behavior. Some teachers could be more consistent, as the 69% indicates.

  • I think we as teachers have given the rules of the classroom, hallways, and school all throughout the year. Some students do a great job on those rules set by the teachers, but some students just seem think they don't have to follow them. We can tell a student's multiple times but some just don't care of listen.

  • Teachers see behavior and we want to correct it.

  • Student behavior seems to get worse throughout the year, as we get closer to summer. I think the key is CONSISTENTLY enforced. So if you do THIS infraction you will always receive THIS consequence.

  • Because we are not robots, every teacher handles discipline differently, we have different personalities and interactions with students. I don't think there is a blanket fix for this

  • as a campus we need universal expectations. right now some grade levels let students do something where another grade level doesn't so I am hesitant to say something to other grades when I see them in the hall. If we had universal expectations then we could all work together to enforce them and it would be easier for students to know the expectations because they are the same from pre k to 5th.

  • Be clear on school wide rules for students.

  • Teachers are not on the same page when it comes to behavior. There also has to be HIGH expectations when it comes to behavior from all teachers not just some and to hold those students accountable for those behaviors.

  • i don't know if it goes here per se, but i know that some teachers honestly feel that students are not being disciplined at all when sent to the office but rather receive a wrist slap and are returned to class. in short, they feel unsupported by the disciplinary approach and have given up documenting or reporting issues they are having in class. then frustration mounts and nothing i say seems to make a difference. i do meet with those students when i can but i know it is not enough. perhaps an inclusive meeting with the student, teacher, and admin during the disciplinary process would help? perhaps a strong showing of discipline at year's beginning would prevent the perception by teachers and students that consequences won't apply. i am throwing out ideas here, but i think a collaborative approach here would help the teachers feel like their concerns matter- since they are on the front lines. i feel supported teachers are better, stronger teachers in the classroom, and i think there is just a miscomm between teachers and admin.

  • Some students are given more grace or understanding than others because of their home life or background. We have to have the same consequences and treatment for all students, despite what we know happens at home. Now that does not mean that we cannot be understanding of their home life, and work with each student as it fits best for them.

  • I think disciplinary practice is quite fair.

  • I compare it to differentiating in the classroom. All students are expected to learn the same standards, just as all students have the same behavior expectations, But, not all students can become proficient in the same way. There are different learning styles and even academic disabilities that can make the journey look different for each student, but they are still expected to learn the same things. Just as different student backgrounds and even responses to discipline can be different for each child, but there are still the same behavior expectations. While our supports or consequences can look different, they still have to be in place, just like we still have to provide support for kids academically despite the hurdles they face.

  • Create a system that is consistent across the school so that ALL teachers know what to do

  • For the most part, every student receives the same level of discipline. Sadly, the overall disciplinary consequences need to be stricter.

  • I think we need to outline a more specific handbook for discipline that lists each infraction and the exact consequence that will be received every time. If you hit another student, you will receive lunch and recess detention and a phone call home every time. If you call another student a racial slur, you will receive THIS consequence every single time.Keep a more accurate record of every student and the infractions they have acquired. Every student would have a "record" so we could consistently see how many times they have done the same infraction.

  • I think disciplinary practices are good.

  • This perception could be from our repeat offenders. Sometimes their behavior is so bad, we have to let certain actions slide, otherwise they would never be in class. I'm sure the students who are well behave see that, but interpret as not being fair.

  • Sometimes we have to ignore repeat offenders, because we've tried everything else and they just want attention. When other kids see us ignoring behaviors, they wonder, "why aren't they getting in trouble?" If repeat offenders had consequences, they might not be so quick to always act out.

  • We need to hold everyone accountable for behaviors, if you see something not right, say something.

  • Overall, our students are very well-behaved and feel safe. There are a few discipline problems that are reoccurring. Those students continue repeating the bad behaviors and it can make a teacher HATE coming to work. No one should HATE coming to work. These reoccurring disrespectful behaviors must be addressed. I appreciate the detention in fifth grade now. It tells kids, they will have consequences for their behaviors

Staff Survey Feedback - Teacher Trust

  • More outings after school, vertical team meetings

  • I feel like I can so far and have seen a lot of good, but I have heard others feel differently.

  • I do not have any issues with trust.

  • I think the planning we do as a team and all of our summer trainings will greatly improve this percentage.

  • improving. Might be because of new staff every year.

  • I feel that this number has improved this year from last year. I'm not sure.

  • We're a campus full of women (and about 3 males), I'm surprised we even scored this high, lol. In my perspective, it seems higher though. As a whole, we're really good at supporting and helping one another. Oh well if there's a bad apple or two; show me a place where there isn't.

  • I think that is a really good percentage for the school knowing that the school as almost all women. I think all the staff have been very trusting and I feel like I could go to anyone and ask for advice or help.

  • I think more social activities would be good. Like after school Meals.

  • I think general small work drama is what made this number lower. I am not sure you can do anything about adults gossiping? I like the idea of the comment cards for people's mailboxes.

  • This might be an individual challenge. Be more honest, positive, helpful. Avoid negativity (we are all guilty, burnout is real) and rumors.

  • we don't come together and people leave as soon as school is out. I am one of those people but we need to have move events, and meetings where we can interact and get things done. Right now things are left up to us to do whenever and they are not happening.

  • I don't know. I feel I can trust my peers.

  • I think staff belonging is the hardest thing on our campus. Everyone is very comfortable on their team, but outside of it, there is very little collaboration. I think the secret valentine was a great way to help people get to know others outside of their grade level. I think doing things like that but on a smaller scale could help people to know the staff better as a whole.

  • I think there has to be better communication within teachers. When you feel like you can talk to your coworkers openly and bring issues forward without them being frustrated or snapping back makes things run a lot smoother. This also applies to safety issue because if I am aware that something is going on with your student and I can talk to them better or just by giving you a nonverbal cue you can know what is going on we can put our behavior plan in place or safety plan in place and deal with the situation.

  • Well, this makes me sad to know  that some here on our campus feel that way.  I don't know why this is even a factor .

Staff Survey Feedback - Social & Emotional Health of Students

  • I feel that we need to help these students build the vocabulary to ask for help or to verbalize their feelings.

  • I once worked at a school that had an ISS room. This was a sub that would come to school everyday and would take students that needed a reset or a consequence. I don't know how feasible this is but it worked great at that campus.

  • Creating an incentive as a school to encourage school attendance.

  • Continue with LiM and learning to incorporate the puppets

  • My students love coming to school and feel loved and protected. Some students may need more behavior support to protect students. It would be helpful to have two aides next year.

  • Continue with Habbit Huddle Lessons

  • I am curious what Leader In Me looks like in the older grades. I would think these areas would be addressed.

  • I would like to see more visuals for LIM(such as the Light House), Name our pods with Habit Names, and create a song for our school to create the sense of belonging.

  • Our school counselor needs to be available on a daily basis to support the social emotional health needs of our students. Having to tell a student to wait until Ms. Payne is done teaching her class does absolutely nothing for our students, and Ms. Baker's only here twice a week. School counselors handling small group counseling, individual counseling, scheduling, etc. Counselors need to be readily available to meet with the campus students.

  • I think this year was tough for the 5th graders. I think a lot of the stress towards the end of the year was because of the STAAR and going into middle school next year. I think for next year we could do something to ease the stress for our 5th graders. The last 2 months of school for them are definitely not easy for them or the teacher's stress. I also think the counselor should be able to see students anytime of the day when it is needed. Its hard when the counselor doesn't have time in the day to talk to a student that is struggling because they are busy with specials rotation.

  • I believe everything is working. What works for me is that I always talk with the students to see what is going on.

  • Create a buddy system between the grade levels. For example: kindergarten is paired with 3rd graders, 1st grade is paired with 4th grade, 2nd grade is paired with 5th grade. These buddy systems would meet weekly to help the students provide mentorship to each other.

  • More options for student clubs and activities to enrich the school spirit and togetherness. More time with counselor would benefit many students, that's not possible with her having to teach specials

  • right now our students are not given the tools to solve conflicts on their own. They get talked to by teachers and admin and warned but then nothing happens and it continues. Our students need to be exclusively taught how to talk to people and solve their problems. I thought this is what they were doing in counseling every other week but they say they do scavenger hunts and watch videos. I think our kids need more direct teaching on these skills. Since they are already going to the counselor every other week this would a great way to implement this as part of something that already exists.

  • I think students need something to work towards. I think that if we implement the house system and stick with it it could help our students take some accountability and work together towards a goal. I think we need to have celebrations for the students who earn it like we did last year and stick to our word and hold students accountable. If they regularly don't behave in class then they should not be allowed to go.

  • I think just helping students understand their feelings and how to express their emotions. They also need better conflict resolution when working with partners.

  • We need to work on unifying our behavior plan and our school plan.

  • I believe that our students need more opportunities to learn how to be a polite and accepting of others differences. . Some students don't have someone at home to model for them how to be polite, communicate with others and how to encourage one another. It falls on us their teachers to encourage students, make them feel safe, wanted and accepted for who they are. There should be more encouragement to be better humans from the counselor.

  • not really. we need to provide more restorative justice and restorative practices on the daily

Staff Survey Feedback - Safety

  • We now have an security guard on the campus all day. He is very attentive in the campus and loves what he do.

  • I feel safe and know that we have systems in place to prevent issues.

  • Any time I had an issue with a student. Ms. Diaz has been quick to call parents and resolve the situation with me.

  • Having Mr. Guzman on campus is great.

  • We have our own security guard.

  • I would feel more secure if there were no parents on Fridays, due to the high amount of shooting incidents in our current society.

  • I appreciate the officer on campus. I definitely appreciate keeping doors locked.

  • I feel completely safe in our facility. Our most "vulnerable" area is the playground (which makes sense). We occasionally have people who walk through the playground, or even come up to the fence to talk to students they know. That would be my biggest safety concern. I do not feel as though all teachers always feels supported when dealing with student discipline. We still do not have a school wide behavior plan, and there are times when greater discipline issues, go unresolved or brushed off. Even though we have overall good student behavior, there are still times when some cross the line. For example, students being disrespectful to teachers, chronic disruptive class behavior, students refusing to work, etc. A solution could be a detailed behavior plan with steps and actions for every type of behavior that is commonly seen in the classroom, that ALL teachers are required to follow in their classroom. This goes beyond schoolwide procedures. This is to address handling student behavior.

  • Love that we have a security officer! That makes me and the students feel a lot more safe! The new door locked system also makes me feel safe! I like that we give our students grace but for some students we need to take other measures because I feel that some of their behavior is only getting worse. I LOVE teaching at Carrollton Elementary because I relate to many of my students are their families. I grew up like many of them! I feel like some of our students need more counseling support. At times, this is put back on the teachers. I feel like we have many conversations with our students who are having conflicts with other students but we also need to have consequences in place for repeat offenders. I feel like behavior is escalating.

  • Students and staff I believe feel as safe as they can. I feel supported in student discipline and am assured that if I needed additional assistance, I could ask for it and receive that help. I think safety and security overall do very well. I very much appreciate Officer Guzman's rounds to ensure all door are locked each day.

  • Having Officer Guzman in the building has helped our students and teachers feel safe.

  • Our front office staff does a good job of checking people as they enter the building.

  • I think we do a great job on safety and making sure the students are same. The students seem to want to be at school and us as teachers trying to make learning fun and engaging. I have felt very supported here emotionally, academically, and physically. Whenever I have had a question, I felt comfortable asked and was able to be successful.

  • With a security guard on campus it is alot better.

  • Ms. Payne has been pulling groups at lunch. The students enjoy these groups and I think it gives them a sense of belonging. The students also enjoy going to groups with Ms. Medina at lunch. I think this helps them feel safe and supported at the school.

  • I feel better having a permanent security officer on the campus, as most parents and students do as well.

  • I feel that our students feel safe & belong. I feel supported in student discipline & that teachers want to teach at our school. We hired a security guard which has helped students and staff feel safe.

  • I feel a sense of belonging within my class and I know that my students feel safe and cared for in my class.

  • When it comes to security, I feel secure at school. Any time we have had issues and we present them to our SRO he takes them into account and is on top to fix the issue. Our building is old so there are a few hiccups and things that we need to get fixed but that hopefully will happen in the near future.

  • Having a security guard on campus and being transparent about things that go on on campus. Also love feeling safe by having the doors checked.

  • ...the addition of the SRO.

  • I believe most teachers can handle small incidents in class. The kids seem to feel safe and loved. There is a mutual sense of respect between students and teachers. I feel safe, for the most part.

  • We do NOT need to have parents coming into the building during the school day, such as lunch on Friday. This is NOT a secure building & there are many safety concerns.

  • Not having parents during lunch. We could have more festivals or parent activities after school, but during school is not safe.

  • Continue to educate ALL staff on why we should not be propping doors open---NOT SAFE! Puts us all at risk...

  • On Friday's there are several parents walking around the school. Having parents on Friday's for lunch does make a concern in my mind. I feel if we had any safety issues it would be on a Friday with a parent.

  • The exterior cafeteria doors make me nervous. They get opened a lot when students are in the cafeteria, and I know this is a necessary evil to remove trash, but I wonder if there is a way to reduce the amount of time they are open while children are present. I will say this has been much better this year than previous years. My own exterior door makes me nervous as well considering it is made of wood and ancient.

  • Not all exit doors have a key card access and that makes it unsafe if we were in need of immediate shelter. The front parking spaces are impossible to get to in the morning, and the rear parking lot with its enormous blind spots and lack of lighting is an open invitation for car thieves, vandals, muggers, attackers, and anyone else who wishes to do us or our vehicles harm.

  • Making sure doors are locked

  • I question the building's doors. They seem to always be needing repair or not working correctly. Much of that can be attributed to the age of the school

  • I think all teachers should get into the habit of checking doors after they walk in, I have personally found outside doors not close when we come in.
