My annual speech on homework....may I have your attention, please....

Do your homework.

If it were only that simple.

If you know me, you know my feelings about homework. About once (or twice) a year, I get on my "soapbox" about homework. If you are interested in hearing it again, read on. If you are tired of hearing my opinion, please skip this section :-)

Educational research has yet to successfully demonstrate a tie between homework and academic success in elementary school.

Students are at school for 8 hours. Some are here for longer (tutoring, ATB). When they get home, it is a stressor to continue to do work. We really want kids to go home at 3 o’clock, tired. We want their brain to be tired.

When kids get home we want them to enjoy their families. We want them to go to soccer practice or football practice, and we want them to go to bed (on time!). And that’s it.

Do you like to go home to do additional work? Students do not either.

I posted this on my FB page this week and there are many responses from parents and teachers.

Please think about the reason you give homework. Just because you have always done it does not make it effective. Is it essential in the students learning? If a parent is requesting extra work, feel free to give them some. Please do not assume that the majority of your students and families are supportive of homework.

Also -- I respect your decision as a professional on what you decide for your class but I am firm that we will never give consequences to students who do not turn in homework (walking during recess, work time during recess, etc.) This is something that is out of our control, students should not be punished.

When looking at Parent Square, I am noticing that we are busy and possibly forgetting to send the Monday Morning Message. Please make sure this is sent out weekly (I do not care if it is on a Monday).
