I know many of you are looking for ways to support your students - especially those that may be struggling with verbal communication or adapting to the school environment. I also know you are diligently teaching routines and procedures, etc. because I've seen AMAZING progress in all grade levels, and it's only the 7th day of school! That's because of YOU!
Ms. G (Speech Pathologist) has put together some strategies to help:
In-Class Supports:
Visual Schedule – A visual schedule allows the student to visually see and anticipate what will happen next. This is highly beneficial for your student, who likes to know what will happen next and who benefits from structure.
Token Reward System – Some students benefit from more frequent rewards. This is a way for you to allow your student to earn more frequent rewards outside of your classroom economy system.
Choices – When a student is frustrated, let’s try offering 2 choices between activities that are acceptable in the moment (ie. Do you want to write with the green pencil or the red pencil? Do you want to read in the teacher chair or at your spot).
Reduce Verbal Direction – Try pointing to a visual and reducing/simplifying the verbal direction.
Slow Down/ Simplify Instruction – The school day is an exciting and fast pace time. For the struggling learner, slowing down and checking for understanding can go a long way.
Get on eye level – Especially with our younger students, getting to eye level with these students is a powerful tool. By getting to eye level, your student can read your facial expression and watch your mouth while you speak.
To access the 2022-23 Performance Charts, go to the Staff Portal on the CFBISD website and scroll towards the bottom and click on "assessments" - then you will see this picture and the buttons for K-2 and 3-5.
*They look different and are not provided by semester. This is where they need to be at the end of the FALL semester.
If you are a new teacher and work with bilingual/ESL students, you need to set up an Ellevation Account.
From Sylvia:
Please send the invitation below to teachers needing to create a profile in Ellevation. Once logged in they will have access to the Teacher Data Dashboard which will identify who their English Learners are along with STAAR and TELPAS Scores.
ELLEVATION PLATFORM for ENGLISH LEARNERS
Carrollton Farmers Branch is implementing a powerful software called Ellevation, which focuses exclusively on educators and the English Learners (ELs) they serve. The BIL-ESL team at your campus uses Ellevation to simplify administrative responsibilities and support EL data analysis and reporting. We’re excited to provide Ellevation access to classroom teachers across the district as well!
Please create your Ellevation account: CFBISD Self-Registration Link
You will receive a confirmation email with a link that you will need to click to finish the registration process. If you have any difficulty logging in please contact the Ellevation Help Center at support@ellevationeducation.com.

Please remember to put yourself in the parent's shoes: I meet parents a lot who are genuinely concerned about their child, but don't know how to help. Whether it's due to a lack of education, support, or understanding, they are having the same problems you are. Try to understand how difficult it must be to have a child with a disability, and be cautious in how you speak about that child with the parent.
Please do NOT come to school if you are sick. The CFB testing site is open at 6:00 am to allow staff to test prior to coming to work. You will need to be tested if you have any two of the following symptoms:

o New uncontrolled cough
o New onset of severe headache
o Diarrhea
o Nausea/vomiting
o Abdominal pain
o Sore throat
o New loss of taste or smell
