In literature, authors frequently use characters and the situations they encounter to illuminate ideas, concepts, or messages they want their readers to think more deeply about. Often times, as characters experience certain events, they change over time. Remember that diction, or the words chosen by the author that create these tones - may also signify change in a character. The changes these characters go through ultimately help develop an emerging message or theme connected to the work.
