Week's Objective: Students will be exploring mass incarceration as another example of systemic racism. In doing so, we will look at the historical events that have caused modern day mass incarceration (SS 1.2 - Analyzing Complex Causes) and the effects mass incarceration has had on African American neighborhoods (SS 1.3 - Analyzing Complex Effects). While viewing a documentary on the topic, students will be working on their ability to interpret text/information (ELA 2.1) and identifying key ideas that have contributed to mass incarceration (ELA 2.2).
Next week, students will use the information gathered to prepare for and participate in a collaborative discussion. This will be a performance task evaluating their ability to prepare for and participate in a collaborative discussion (ELA 7.1 and ELA 7.2).
Monday, December 8th - Due to the shortened classes on Friday, we will use the first half of Monday to finish Monday's Social Justice Art Friday presentations.
Once presentations are complete, students will work in groups to review, edit, and complete the Graphic Organizer asking them to evaluate whether or not the Fair Housing Act of 1968 led to change, continuity or both in African American neighborhoods. The graphic organizer is intended to help prepare them for a future ACQC performance task. (SS 1.3). Graphic organizer template was distributed to students through Google Classroom.
Tuesday, December 10th through Friday, December 13th - Students will be viewing a documentary over the next several days asking them to analyze the historical causes of the current state of the American criminal justice system (SS 1.2) and the effects the American criminal justice system has had on African American neighborhoods (SS 1.3). Regarding causes, students will specifically be asked to identify and analyze the impact of different government decisions, business practices, and media portrayal of African Americans to understand how these institutions have worked together to create this issue.
Note: Social Justice Art Friday Presentations have been rescheduled for after the Christmas break to provide you with more time to prepare for next week's performance task discussion on mass incarceration. Please see SJAF schedule for new dates if you were a presenter who was rescheduled. Thank you.
