Week's Objective: Students will be working on building their vignette asking them to analyze the effects of systemic racism on individuals and communities through the perspective of their characters' perspective. (SS 1.3; ELA 6.2)
Additional Resources:
1) If you're still unclear on exactly how neighborhoods deteriorated over the years, please see the attached module. It's also a source to better understand race in general.

2) If you are writing anything regarding the health of black men and black boys in a neighborhood, here is a report from last year that the mayor's office put out.

Monday, January 6th: Students will be using the information in the articles below and through their own research to list the effects that mass incarceration has had on individuals, families, and communities. Students will use the Concentric Circles worksheet provided in class to list the effects. Students should be creating brief lists on this sheet without going into a lot of detail. Any statistics they come across in their reading should be listed on the back. Also, there's no way to get through all of the information in these 5 articles in the time provided so students will need to work on their skimming and highlighting important information skills. Students must use no less than 2 of the articles in their research.
Students will use this initial exercise to begin building their characters and story.
