Week's Objective: Students will complete their vignette on the effects of systemic racism (ELA 6.2; SS 1.3) and begin working on the ACQC aimed at using factual evidence to answer the prompt "How does systemic racism affect individual lives and communities?" (ELA 4.1, ELA 4.2, ELA 4.4, SS 1.3). In addition, students will have the opportunity to see the movie Just Mercy that may help build both their vignette and their ACQC.
Monday, January 13th: Students will aim to finish their vignette on the effects of systemic racism before the end of the day (ELA 6.2; SS 1.3). Students are encouraged to review all minimum requirements for the vignette portion of the assignment AND the competencies to ensure all requirements are met.
Tuesday, January 14th: Students will begin building their ACQC aimed at using factual evidence to answer the prompt "How does systemic racism affect individual lives and communities?" (ELA 4.1, ELA 4.2, ELA 4.4, SS 1.3). The evidence that students use should support no less than 5 of the decisions that the students made in shaping characters or plot points in their vignette. Students are encouraged to review, feedback from previous ACQC's, all minimum requirements for the vignette portion of the assignment AND the competencies to ensure all requirements are met.
Students should begin their ACQC by completing an ACQC graphic organizer helping them organize the information into an ACQC format. The quote portion of the assignment should be an analysis of a quote from their vignette explaining what that quote can teach the reader about the effects of systemic racism on individuals and/or communities.
Also, I hope you enjoy the alternative meaning for ACQC that I found on the internet.
Wednesday, January 15th - Students will be given the opportunity to go see the film, Just Mercy, based on the book by Bryan Stevenson (pictured on the left). Stevenson was a contributor to the film, 13th, which students viewed in their exploration of mass incarceration.
Students can use the material to inspire parts of their LC1 final project.
Departure for the movie will be at 11 AM from Building 21. Students will be dismissed from the theater.
For further information on the movie and the events surrounding the movie, please see the attached discussion guide:
