Week's Objective: Students will perform research on teacher-selected materials so that they may be able to analyze the effects of housing discrimination in the mid 20th Century on African American neighborhoods today (SS 1.3). Students will annotate two articles: the 1st article will be analyzing the events leading up to the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968; the 2nd article is an analysis of the effectiveness of the Fair Housing Act (ELA 2.1). Students will turn in their annotations, including answering short-answer questions and completing a graphic organizer at the end of the week for a performance task grade. Competency being assessed is ELA 2.1 - Reading Strategies. This is setting them up for a future performance task that will ask them to write an ACQC analyzing the effects of housing discrimination on neighborhoods today (SS 1.3, ELA 4.1, ELA 4.2).
Reminders:
Monday, December 2nd:
Summarize the story of the Contract Buyers League and North Lawndale in no less than 7 sentences. Include information on what it meant to "buy on contract" and how that differed from buying homes using a traditional mortgage. Explain how the people who lived in North Lawndale dealt with this problem and explain if they were successful. Finally, include information on the neighborhood today.
Tuesday, December 3rd:
NOTE: IF YOU DID NOT FINISH YESTERDAY'S WORK, PLEASE FOCUS ON STARTING THE ANNOTATION PERFORMANCE TASK BELOW. THE PERFORMANCE TASK IS WORTH MORE AND SHOULD BE A HIGHER PRIORITY THAN YESTERDAY'S WORK. I WILL ACCEPT YESTERDAY'S WORK UP UNTIL THE END OF THE WEEK.
ALSO, I ACCIDENTALLY LABELED YESTERDAY'S DO NOW AS "DECEMBER 6TH." PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU TURN THAT IN IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO.
REMEMBER: The big performance task assignments get a lot easier if you put in the work on the annotations, questions, and graphic organizers up front. This helps you to organize your information and your thoughts. Do yourself a favor and take these assignments seriously.
