Rene Magritte was born in Lessines, Belgium in 1898. He is what's known as a Surrealist Artist - an Artist who makes people THINK!! His paintings of familiar objects placed in strange settings are totally meant to make you scratch your head and challenge what you know.
Check out his Artworks below, and see what YOU think!!
Magritte plays with a lot of different "TRICKS" in his Paintings . . or what he called 'Poetic Puzzles'. He found clever ways to change the Idea or "Story" within the picture so that it could not possibly make sense to the viewer . . you and me!!
I'm guessing that you've never seen anything like a Magritte Painting?!?
One of Magritte's most famous paintings is called "The Treachery of Images" (or, "This Is Not A Pipe"). It is a pipe, isn't it?? ...but then again, it's just a Painting of one - or in our case, a Digital Picture of a Painting!?!
...CONFUSING, right!?
Let's try to copy Magritte by making a Drawing of something that is DEFINITELY not a pipe!
