Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama (Yah-yoee Koo-sah-mah) was born in Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan in 1929She is a Contemporary Artist.  Yayoi has had a long and productive Art career (even though her parents thought it was a BAD IDEA for her to be an Artist!?!)  From Films, Paintings, and Sculptures to Fashion and Poetry . . you name it, she’s probably tried it.  And when Yayoi tries something, she DEFINITELY puts her own STYLE into it!!

"Accumulation" - 1952

The Artist covered in Dots

"Yellow Pumpkin" - 1992

"Ascension of Polka Dots On the Trees" - 2006

There are WAY too many Artworks by Kusama to show, but hopefully you get the idea that she really, REALLY likes DOTS!  Do her Artworks INSPIRE you?

"Infinity Net" - 1979

"Dots" - 2004

"The Spirits of the Pumpkins Descended Into the Heavens" - 2007

"Dots - Obsession" - 2009

ART IDEA  #1

This Dot Painting by Yayoi Kusama - called "Dots ACPT" is a great example of her LOVE of DOTS

Grab a piece of PAPER, and then CREATE a "DOT Artwork" in whatever COLORS you choose.

ART IDEA  #2

One of my favorite Artworks by Kusama is an Installation called "Obliteration Room".  She paints a room completely WHITE, and then leaves DOT STICKERS for visitors to stick all over the place!  For this idea, FIND an EMPTY, UNUSED OBJECT and COVER IT WITH DOTS!

"Obliteration Room"

Kusama has repeated this idea in many different Art Galleries and Museums around the world!

ART IDEA  #3

If you feel like you’ve seen DOTS in artworks before, you’re not dreaming!  Since the beginning of time people have loved making marks, and the good ole DOT has always been a favorite:)  From Australian Aboriginal DOT paintings to the Pointillist artworks of the late 1800’s, DOTS are EVERYWHERE!!

CREATE an Artwork that uses DOTS, in a DIFFERENT way . . really STRETCH your Imagination!!
