Joseph Cornell was born in Nyack, New York in 1903. His father worked in the textile industry, and his mother was a teacher. When he was 14 Joseph's father died , and the family moved to Queens, New York. Joseph went to a fancy High School in Massachusetts, but he left before he graduated and moved back home.
Cornell is most famous for his "Box Sculptures"! Although he knew about Art and other Artists, no one taught him how to make them. He filled his 'shadow boxes' with found objects and beautiful antique pieces and pictures. What do you see inside them?
This Box Sculpture by Joseph Cornell is great example of ASSEMBLAGE ... putting different pictures and objects together to create a single, new Artwork.
Like Cornell, find FIVE objects that you like, some PAPER to line the inside of the box, and then ASSEMBLE a "Box Sculpture" with scissors, glue, and imagination.
Although most of his famous Artworks were "Box Sculptures", sometimes Joseph worked 'flat' or 2-dimensionally. This "Untitiled" artowork is a COLLAGE, or a flat group of pictures grouped together creatively. For this idea, FIND a blank paper or piece of cardboard (+ some GLUE and SCISSORS) and COVER it with Interesting Pictures! - - old magazines are a great place to start your adventure!
