#Booksnaps Level 2

#BookSnaps is a creation of Tara M.Martin that has taken the Twitterverse by storm. Her idea for #BookSnaps came out of a book study she participated in where she contemplated how to create digital representations of the text along with the annotation. Think of it as a new way of highlighting and using sticky notes!

#BookSnaps are a perfect vehicle for documenting key understanding and takeaways through digital, visual representations. They can also serve as a way for students to ask questions about the text or inquire about unfamiliar vocabulary, too.

Don't let the "snap" part of #BookSnaps dissuade you from trying this out. There are a variety of tools that you and students can use, aside from Snapchat, to create these!! Just keep reading for plenty of app-specific tutorials and don't miss the Coding #BookSnaps section further down.

#BookSnaps

One of the key pieces of #BookSnaps is to make sure that the Title and Author(s) of the book are somehow visible either in the image itself, by including a picture of the book's cover or by including that information in the annotation.

#BookSnap Requirements For The Badge

Students snap an image of the text that will be the focus of their annotation.
Attribution - They MUST make sure that the Title and Author are included in ONE of the following ways: They are in the actual image, they are included in your annotation message OR by include a smaller image of the book's cover as shown in the example above.
Annotation - These are your thoughts or questions about a particular passage or quote from the page you snapped. They can be a text overlay like above, inserted as text boxes, inserted as speech bubbles or thought bubbles, etc.
Extras - These are other images that may help communicate the information in the passage you focused on, your own emotions aligned to your annotation (confusion, surprise, anger, etc) or other images/drawings that may draw attention to a specific line or word.
Submit as shown below. You can either submit ONE student-created #BookSnap or a link to a Padlet wall where you are collecting them.

A few (of MANY) reasons to create #BookSnaps

• To annotate and share excerpts of the book you’re reading

• It allows the reader to connect an idea or thought by creating a digital visual representation. The visual representation solidifies the text content within the mind and signals the brain to retrieve the idea from memory.

• Diagram the rise, fall, and climax of the plot (see an example image below)

• Highlight figurative language and imagery

• Notate character conflict and internal struggles (see example below)

• To personally connect to the text; this is my favorite!

• Point out the main idea or a supporting argument

• It has its own hashtag #BookSnaps on Twitter!

• It’s EASY! Just read, snap, reflect, add stickers, share, and repeat.

TO EARN THIS BADGE

1. Students create a #BookSnap image from the text of a book they are reading using any app / tool you prefer.

2. How to Submit Student #BookSnap:

Save the student's #BookSnap image to Google Drive and share with a link to submit in the form

Upload the student image in the form. It makes a copy for me and you keep the original.

Submit a link to your Padlet wall where they are posted.

4. Content Area : READING or name of your book.

5. Grade Level: Use the level you teach.
