The BCSS Ed Tech Innovation Challenges provides a framework where teachers can earn digital badges, which represent their personal achievements in learning and the application of that learning in instruction. There are a variety of topics to choose from, which will continue to expand over time and may include various levels.

Each topic will have specific tasks that must be completed and verified before a badge can be awarded. Typically, a Level 1 or Novice badge requires the lowest level of knowledge about the topic and asks teachers to work at the lowest level of Bloom’s. As the level and XP value increases, so does the complexity and depth of the tasks, with the highest levels challenging teachers to provide a lesson outline and student artifacts that demonstrate classroom implementation of the chosen topic.

Each badge is worth a specified amount of XP (Experience Points). The more complex the task, the higher the points. These points will translate into individual and school leader boards.

As you explore the available badges, you’ll notice that each topic includes information about classroom applications, SAMR and 4 C’s alignment, in addition to the criteria for earning the badge. All learning is self-directed, on-demand, anytime, and anywhere. There are no timelines for completing a task, unless the task itself has a specified window, such as the Monster Hangout badge. You are encouraged to work with colleagues to complete tasks and to seek support where needed.
