"Power of the People"
General Facts:
Capital is Santhia on the Wild Water Passage.
Orissa has few natural resources of its own but is the banking center of Zemia and the primary lender for many nations. It's close alliance with Amuria was a key factor in the latter's victory in the Great Northern War.
A peaceful, overtly neutral nation throughout Zemia’s wars, Orissa wields a quiet power. It has had only occasional skirmishes with Khulna across the Wild Water Passage regarding free shipping lanes.
Financial Central - Financing the Whole Known World
Orissa’s Financial Central region began as a fishing and trade port and rose to even greater prominence, becoming a major trade and banking center.
The Central Bank of Orissa became the greatest single repository of wealth in Zemia, and to the present day, everyone from princes to politicians frequent it to request loans.
To avoid the clan warfare that plagued the region for centuries, the tradesmen who founded Orissa established a pure democracy. With the aid of a prosperous financial sector, this democracy seized upon technological advances that enabled this challenging approach to governance to thrive. Although the Financial Sector is frustrated by the Fishing Coast's slower paced deliberations, they eventually incorporate votes sent by each precinct.
Fish Coast - Quiet but Fervent Self-governance
While the Financial Sector provides the intellectual and financial prowess for the nation, the Fish Coast is the heart and muscle of this curiously flourishing democracy. The principles of independence, freedom, and equal consent has been part of the coastal culture for decades.
Smaller fishing communes developed a taste of decentralized democracy, so the technological advancements of the Financial Sector’s version of “automated digital democracy” has some of Fish Coast residents concerned with possible corruption. Many in the Fish Coast prefer Town Halls to cell phone apps.
While the fishing industry flourishes, the need to participate digitally requires more energy resources. The region is deciding the best way to meet those needs: small ecological wind farms, larger gas power plants from foreign providers, imports from other countries in Zemia, and even some austerity measures to limit the energy consumption of the extravagant Financial Sector.
