"In His guidance, we follow"
General Facts:
Athlone is the capital and main commerce center.
As a theocracy, all Donethalians follow the Zemani faith, the oldest and largest religion in Zemia. This faith is a core aspect in the lives of the citizenry.
For centuries, Donethal has overtly and covertly fought with Dacca over the border and the Disputed Territories. After Cavan’s decimation of the port city Cashel, Donethal reluctantly agreed to Cavan’s autonomy and current borders. Fights continue with rebels from the Disputed Territories, particularly over access to the Holy City, sacred to Donethal, but within the Disputed Territories.
A decade ago, Kurgan religious pilgrims requested and were granted sanctuary in Donethal. Although they did not share Donethal’s state religion, the clerics were sympathetic with the pilgrims; right to practice their faith without persecution.
Donethal was overwhelmed by the number of refugees and has had difficulty addressing the needs of the Kurgan refugee camps in the southwest. They decided to employ them in the oil fields and power plants and, eventually grew to distributes over half of the oil traded in Zemia.
Donethal’s Capital Sector is separated from the rest of the country by mountains, and retains a strange modern look despite being one of the oldest cities in Zemia. The old and new architecture provide aesthetic and philosophical contrasts of this fascinating city.
As clerics debate interpretations of holy texts, the people alternate between celebrating and condemning the consumer wealth that comes with bountiful oil production.
Nearby “oil cities'' surround the capital and ensure endless access to energy and petroleum products.
The massive temples within the city are especially beautiful, and this land is generally home to the wealthy, the influential, and the policy makers of this nation.
While the Capital Sector is a popular spot in Donethal for tourists, there is an “inner city” that is restricted from all those who do not adhere to the nation’s faith. The “inner city” is said to be especially gorgeous and extravagant, but there is little proof as photograph and video is strictly forbidden.
Entrance into this “inner city” or “true city” is considered an important milestone in the faith.
A recently distinguished region, the Holy Oil Lands have been distinguished as unique by the presence of the resource being found in especially high abundance here.
Surveyors confirmed that the oil wells run so deep that it is beyond measure. There is some controversy as to whether or not the oil can be considered holy, but the region itself can be characterized as being highly valuable and is set to be quickly industrialized.
The powerful clerics of this region actively work to quell the “anti-oil rants of radicals”.
The Holy Oil Lands are also home to one of the largest canyons in the world. Travelling down into these canyons is considered dangerous, but potentially lucrative, as several rare gems and minerals can be found if one ventured deep enough.
Much of the canyon is fenced off to prevent accidents, but occasionally a bold treasure hunter will forego this warning, some of which go missing in the canyon depths.
The bulk of the country of Donethal are the “Holy Taro Lands” as this is where the main food production and distribution can be located. The taro plant is the material and spiritual heart of Donethal. It is considered sacred and also is part of the daily Donethalian diet.
Because of Taro’s central role in daily life, the Holy Taro Farms are particularly lucrative. Many holy officials control the finer aspects of business and lifestyle here.
Furthermore, the Donethal military bases and training academy can be found in this area. While the Capital Sector is the modern capital, the Holy Taro lands offer an older source of Donethalian politics and spiritual power.
The Kurganite Refugee Sector has nearly turned into a tiny state of its own, the inhabitants here have spread out into several small towns that are largely self-sustaining.
Still, the rising populations strain the limits of these overburdened areas.
While their presence was considered controversial at first, many of these migrants became followers of the Donethal religion, and thus gained acceptance through a shared faith. They have become an essential component of the oil industry--providing a majority of the southern labor force.
The Kurganite refugee sector is also home to one of the largest and most notorious black markets in the world.
The government of Donethal does not acknowledge its presence, but it is generally thought that its existence turns a massive profit.
