Greetings AHS Families and School Community,

The season of giving thanks and giving to others is upon us and our AHS school and community has jumped right in! A big thank you goes out to our PTO and parents for supplying dinner and dessert to teachers during parent-teacher conferences; thank you to all parents who were able to attend parent-teacher conferences and worked with our teachers to support your child; thank you to the school board for unanimously recognizing a change in our schedule will help create better learning for our students; thank you to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) for performing at AHS again this December; and thank you to the many others on this list who support AHS and all of the great things our students accomplish.

As for giving, student senate and HOSA are hosting a Blood Drive as well as the Student Senate Giving Tree; Rho Kappa hosted another amazing Veterans Day Breakfast for all of our community veterans to attend; our Activities Office continues to give an amazing send off to our student athletes with the Hawk Walks; and another successful Food Drive took place this month providing thousands of meals to area families.

With everything going on in our world, a revisit to how fortunate we are at Arrowhead and in this community is a good thing. Every day, our kids remind us of how fortunate we are to be here. We hope you and your families are able to enjoy this month of giving thanks and enjoy your time together.

Important Updates

New Bell Schedule for the 2024-25 School Year

For the past several years, Arrowhead has been exploring schedule change options that optimize student opportunities and provide systemic academic support for all students. After two publicly held Board workshops and several committee meetings of discussion, the Arrowhead School Board approved a new schedule for 2024-25 at the November 8, 2023 School Board meeting.

Our current 10-period day, created in the 1970s, has evolved over the years to include 40 minute, 60 minute, A/B Block (every other day) and everyday block classes. The schedule no longer fits the learning needs of all students to increase growth and achievement for all. The Board and Administration, based on extensive reviews of high-performing area districts, believe we can serve students better in a A/B block schedule with a resource period.

Parent and student survey responses (2022) provided valuable information, and also identified some key misconceptions and misunderstandings about the A/B Block model. The information below should clarify what the new schedule will look like.

Resource Period

Resource period will provide students access to teachers for support, enrichment, and connection on a daily basis. For students who do not need to see a teacher on any given day, the resource period can serve as a study hall. The resource period will be required attendance, unless stated by administration that certain grade levels are excused.
When a student is absent, the daily resource period will support students who missed class. Missing one day in a block schedule also means students do not miss any class time for half of their classes, as opposed to missing EVERY class under the current model. Further, the Canvas Learning Management System assists students with knowing what was taught in addition to providing access to resources/materials.

A/B Block Structure

A/B block provides students with the opportunity to take up to four classes a day on A days and up to four classes a day on B days (8 classes each semester).
We believe it is in our students’ best interests to take a study hall each semester, however students may still enroll in 8 classes per semester.
Students who wish to participate in FSO (Flexible Schedule Option) may still do so. The schedule for FSO will likely be every other day.
Students will have academic core classes (English, Math, Social Studies, Science) all year.
ALL AP courses will continue to have instructional minutes that exceed the College Board recommended minutes for instruction.
Some elective classes/required classes that are currently one semester will remain so while year long classes will remain year long.

Learning in the Block

85 minute classes will be divided into “chunks” of time, improving upon already well-designed lessons by our teachers. Block lessons provide ample time for review of previous lessons, guided practice, deeper “dives” into content, group work, active “hands on” learning, independent support and intervention.
The block of time supports building strong literacy skills, which is a focus of our continuous improvement plan.
Teachers will not be lecturing for 85 minutes. The A/B block supports deeper learning as opposed to mere coverage of topics.
The data from throughout the state of Wisconsin, as we have analyzed school achievement and schedules, shows several of the school districts that outperform AHS currently have a form of block schedule with a resource period.
The A/B block schedule does NOT mean less opportunities for students. We can maintain course options and many students will be able to take more classes because there will be less course conflicts in scheduling. Students can continue to take 7, 7.5 or 8 classes a semester.

Additionally, we will hold an informational meeting about the schedule on December 13, 2023 from 5-6:30 in the South Campus Library.

As partners in education, we have the same goals for our students – we want them to achieve at the highest levels possible and be ready for the next stages of their lives. We want students to learn in a supportive environment and embrace all the opportunities high school offers. We can accomplish this shared vision in the new block schedule. Long-Term Facilities Planning

Arrowhead Union High School District Parents

Long-term facilities planning has begun at Arrowhead Union High School District, a process that will help guide future decision-making about our facilities. The inception of long-range planning reflects Arrowhead’s commitment to supporting students and staff by improving its physical infrastructure and enhancing learning environments.

At the direction of our School Board, we’ve begun a detailed, intentional and data-driven assessment of our buildings and sites. The long-range facilities planning process begins with a detailed review of Arrowhead’s buildings and grounds/infrastructure. The analysis will be finalized in December, 2023 and will consist of three components:

Building Conditions Evaluation: This is a detailed examination of Arrowhead’s capital maintenance needs. This assessment will help us determine if electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or other building systems and sites are in need of repair or replacement.

Educational Adequacy Assessment: An analysis of how well Arrowhead’s facilities support teaching and learning objectives.

Capacity and Utilization Review: An examination of how efficiently our school buildings are being used.

Once we have gathered and reviewed facilities planning data, we will ask parents, staff and community stakeholders to help guide our next steps. Stakeholder input is critical to developing a long-range facilities plan that our community can support. Additional opportunities for community input will be integrated throughout the process.

To this end, we will host two community conversations in late February 2024. Feel free to attend either or both sessions:

Session 1 - Tuesday, February 20th
Session 2 - Thursday, February 29th

The time and location of these community sessions will be shared out in future communications.

Hello Arrowhead Community!

To follow are brief updates on two main School Board activities:

For the purpose of referendum planning, AHS has hired Eppstein Uhen Architects. They are conducting a facilities study to assess the following:

Building Conditions
Educational Adequacy
Capacity and Utilization

Following the completion of the facilities study, EUA will work with VJS Construction Services to prepare a long-range (ten year) recommendations report with a capital improvement / maintenance cost analysis.

A representative of EUA will present the results of the facility study findings on December 13 at the School Board Meeting; the recommendations report / cost analysis will be presented to the Board at our meeting on January 10. Please consider attending these meetings to be up to date on this important information.

The Board offers our sincere appreciation to the members of Arrowhead administration, faculty and staff who have spent many hours working with EUA in the collection of this critical data.

The School Board recently voted unanimously to approve the change of the student schedule to A/B Block with a Resource Period, scheduled to begin in the 2024/25 school year. This approval followed substantial investments of time devoted to understanding the many implications of this change; the Board is confident of the net positive impact of this decision, and will monitor the results of this modification moving forward.

Arrowhead Scholarship Fund

In 2023, Arrowhead Scholarship Fund awarded 110 scholarships valued at $105,000. This year the Arrowhead Scholarship Fund will again be awarding scholarships to the graduating seniors at AHS.

We encourage all students to apply as ASF honors the achievements of well-rounded students who participate in activities, work, volunteer, excel academically and are leaders among their peers. Also, Arrowhead Scholarship Fund will continue to offer scholarships to students planning to continue their education at either two-year or four-year institutions.

By completing one ASF application, your student will be considered for over 100 scholarships!

The ASF scholarship application will be available electronically in late December. All AHS seniors will be notified via email when the application opens and the link for applying will be posted on the Arrowhead Scholarship Fund website under the Students tab at www.arrowheadscholarshipfund.org. Applications are due in late January and students will be notified in early May. The awards presentation is scheduled for Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. in the North Campus Theatre.

AHS DISTRICT REPORT CARD

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is required by state statute (Wis. Stat. 115.385) to generate a school report card for every publicly funded school and district in the state. The report cards provide useful information that guides efforts to best meet the needs of students. These public report cards can be found online at: http://dpi.wi.gov/accountability/report-cards.

School report cards are primarily based on the previous year’s performance (the 2022-23 school year). Schools and districts receive a score for four priority areas:

Achievement - proficiency in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics;
Growth - year-to-year progress in ELA and math achievement;
Target Group Outcomes - outcomes for students with the lowest test scores;
On-Track to Graduation - how successfully students are progressing toward completing their K-12 education.

The priority area scores are aggregated into an overall accountability score. Scores can range from 0 to 100. The 0 to 100 accountability score is not a “percent correct” and is not aligned with traditional 0-100 grading scales. Based on its score, a school or district receives one of five ratings:

Arrowhead prioritizes well-rounded education through an exceptional variety of courses and experiences that grow students' knowledge, skills, health, wellbeing, and sense of community.

The ACT assesses students in grade 11. The ACT assesses students' academic readiness for college. The ACT tests five subject areas – English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Writing. The Composite score is the whole number average of the subject area scores not including Writing. Beginning in 2015-16, an English Language Arts (ELA) score based on the English, Reading and Writing scores and a STEM score based on Mathematics and Science was reported. The highest possible score on the exam is 36.

PreACT Secure is a summative assessment given to 9th and 10th grade students that is aligned to the ACT and the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards. 2022-23 was the first academic year that this assessment was administered to 9th and 10th graders (Previously ACT Aspire). PreACT Secure measures what students have learned in the areas of English, Reading, Mathematics, and Science.PreACT Secure is an online assessment.ACT has established PreACT Secure Readiness Benchmarks that are linked to the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks. These Benchmarks are independent of Wisconsin’s PreACT Secure Performance Level Scale Scores that are used for state accountability.Students scoring at or above the Readiness Benchmark in grades 9-10 are on target to meet the corresponding ACT College Readiness Benchmark in grade 11. The ACT College Readiness Benchmarks are the ACT scores that represent the level of achievement required for students to have a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75-80% chance of obtaining a C or higher in corresponding credit-bearing courses.

ACT’S PRE ACT Secure READINESS BENCHMARKS

A word of caution: Note that no single test can tell us whether students have learned everything that is important for students to learn. Additional local evidence should be reviewed for a more complete picture of student learning.

Arrowhead uses the results of the ACT and Pre ACT as part of district goal setting and our school improvement planning.

SHARE YOUR VIEWS ON EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

We are excited to announce that Arrowhead is participating in Speak Up! This survey will help us answer questions, such as:

How are our students using technology for learning in and out of school?
How important is the use of technology to our teachers and parents? What types of technology do our teachers find of value and how are they using it in the classroom?
Do our ideas about technology align with our students’ parents?

Speak Up, a national research project facilitated by Project Tomorrow, provides an easy way for students, parents, and educators to share their views on technology and learning with Arrowhead. Your input informs our decisions about technology, as well as contributes to the national dialogue about educational technology. Since 2003, Project Tomorrow has collected and shared the viewpoints of more than 5.4 million students, educators and parents. All responses are 100% confidential. No identifying information is collected about/from any participant.

As a nonprofit educational organization, Project Tomorrow provides Speak Up as a free tool for all schools to use – allowing us to conduct this research while also keeping our resources focused in the classrooms. Arrowhead receives our results with state and national comparisons, providing us with valuable data that can be used for our strategic planning, professional development and budgeting plans during the school year.

Rho Kappa 2023 Veterans Breakfast

The Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society was proud to host its annual Veterans Day breakfast again this year. Arrowhead’s Leadership classes also participated in the event by making handmade cards and posters for the veterans. As the veterans entered the building, the hallway was lined with cheering students waving flags and thanking them for the service. Over fifty local veterans and their family members were treated to a delicious breakfast and performances by Arrowhead choir and band students. Each veteran received a boutonnière or flower. Some were lucky enough to win a gift card to a local business. Students enjoyed interacting with the veterans and hearing their stories. Each student came away with a greater appreciation of the sacrifice involved in serving one’s country. Rho Kappa is grateful to our community sponsors who supported the breakfast with donations.

MODEL UN WINNERS!

AHS attended the Carthage College High School Model UN Conference on Friday, November 3. Three students won awards for their position papers.

The top 3 students in each session were selected for best position papers. Position papers are written on the perspective of their country on the topic "for debate" during the UN simulation. Students work for weeks prepping for their topic and country prior to conferences. A lot of research done by these students. Global knowledge is definitely at its finest here.

Arrowhead Writers with Impressive Finishes Featured During the Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books!

Arrowhead writers actually swept The Century Fence student writing contest, which had categories for both essays and poetry. You can see the winners featured on the website here and also attached are all the winning pieces in this document.

STUDENT SENATE SEASON OF GIVING EVENTS!

BLOOD DRIVE: Please join us Friday, December 8th for our Winter Blood Drive. Donations will be given in the West Gym / enter using Door 15. You can use this link to sign up for a donation time. If you can't make it to the December Blood Drive, we will be hosting another Blood Drive on Friday, April 19th.

GIVING TREE: Student Senate is once again sponsoring area families through the Waukesha County Christmas Clearing Council. This year we are sponsoring three families by hosting a Giving Tree Gift Drive November 17 through December 7. Those three families consist of 10 children ranging in age from one to 17 years old.

Giving Trees are located at South Campus in the library and at North Campus in the entryway next to the main office. Beginning on Friday, November 17th, you will find various ornaments, each inscribed with a wish list item for a local child or family. If you are interested in participating in this year’s Giving Tree Gift Drive, we encourage you to take a tag(s) with you as you begin your holiday shopping over the Thanksgiving weekend.

PARTICIPATION IS EASY: Take a tag, purchase the requested gift, and return the unwrapped gift along with a gift receipt to the Giving Tree or the main office at either campus by Thursday, December 7.

Gymnastics - Coach Bob Pulkowski has a young team but looking forward to a fun season!

Boys Swim & Dive - We welcome Rosie Balogh to co-head coach with Norma Balogh. They are looking forward to a great season! The Arrowhead pool is closed for maintenance for a couple weeks so the boys are practicing at Waukesha North High School.

Boys Ice Hockey - Head Coach Raja Aylsworth is excited to see his team play! They have scrimmages on Friday to get the season underway.

Girls Ice Hockey - Head Coach Jackie Little is excited with the growth of the team. They have a varsity and junior varsity roster this year. The team is a co-op with Waterford, Oconomowoc, Hamilton and Kettle Moraine. They opened their season on Saturday night with a win over Badger, 6-2.

Boys and Girls Alpine Ski will begin downhill skiing in mid December after the snow falls. Both boys and girls teams look forward to defending their state championship and Coach Todd Reinking is looking forward to a great season!

VAPING

The Challenge

We want to make our families aware that vaping and vape devices have become a far more prevalent part of our student culture this year. Statistically, we have had more engagement with vaping devices so far this year than we had by the Winter Break last year.

Important information to note:

Devices are becoming more difficult to spot. Companies are creating new devices to intentionally look like highlighters, flash drives, and other school/student elements. We have added a few visual examples below.

Peer pressure is the #1 reason for use. You may not believe that your son or daughter would engage in vaping, but the use spans all groups of students. Use is common in groups who will schedule to meet up in our bathrooms and share a single vaping device.

When asked, most students say:

"It wasn't mine"
"I was holding it for a friend"
"I was there but I didn't use it"
"It was my first time"
"I only did it because of my friends"

The prevalence of obtainable THC for vaping devices is also increasing. Legal (over 21) and commonly accessible Delta 8 and 9 vaping fluids are able to be purchased at area gas stations.

How we are responding as a school:

We follow up on every tip or observed vaping situation brought to our attention.
Working with area law enforcement to host K-9 drug searches on our campus.
Proactive conversations with students during WINGS, Homerooms, and Health classes.
We have installed vape detection devices in bathrooms.
Vaping is detected during our random drug testing agreement with ProHealth as the multi-panel test includes TCH (marijuana) and nicotine.
We are discussing elevating our disciplinary actions in response to violations.

For Parents

Please consider having a conversation with your son or daughter. We truly believe that being proactive and open is the best way to help students make good choices. Our goal in all of this is to change behaviors and for our students to make safer and more positive decisions.
Reach out to a counselor. This is a great way to garner insights and have a supportive conversation about your student.
For those who are interested or have suspicions, parents can purchase testing kits at your local Walgreens.

Non-Arrowhead High School Sponsored Event or Activity

Absence Exception Request

Linked here you will find the application forms to be completed by you and your child relating to a request to exempt absences when participating in non-Arrowhead High School sponsored events or activities. Due to the fact that many of these events/activities take place outside of Hartland as well as outside of Wisconsin, we have found that students who participate in these tend to miss a larger number of days than students who are participating in an event/activity sponsored by AHS.

Parents may excuse their students who miss school for a non-Arrowhead Sponsored Event as long as they are within the 10 days of absence alloted by the State of Wisconsin. Once the 10 days are met, students are marked as unexcused. An exemption in the missed day(s) can be granted if the student qualifies based on the application form linked above and team decision. An exemption means the absence does not count towards those 10 days.

AHS Fundraising

AHS Programs Financial Support

School funding is always a challenging world to navigate. Each year, schools see a set of opportunities with costs associated with them that are unable to be funded by the current state funding and the AHS budget. We often have families with the means to support such opportunities who have expressed that there isn't an avenue to be made aware or to donate directly to a need. Each newsletter, we will list opportunities for our community to consider supporting. There is never an expectation, only an appreciation for considering.

Current Considerations

The Warhawk Rise Program - We are still looking for a committed benefactor who would like to support this great event! A new program we are developing at AHS that will recognize any student who has improved their grade point average by 1.0 or better from one semester to the next. (EX: from a 2.5 Fall semester to a 3.5 Spring semester) This is a significant achievement by students who put in great efforts toward success that may not always receive the recognition they deserve. The annual cost of this program runs about $4,000 each year and includes a semi-formal celebration brunch with their families invited and and gift bags recognizing their efforts. Arrowhead Scholarship Fund - This amazing program provides an incredible amount of scholarships each year thanks to the generosity of our community. Families and companies have the ability to provide direction as to how their scholarship would be decided and awarded. Please see the ASF Donor Webpage for more information!
