FROM THE DESK OF:  Adam Kurth, Principal

Welcome Back!

There are very few days that match the energy of the first days of school.  We hope our students are ready to return and soak up all they can this year at AHS.  A common message we share with students is that there are only four years of high school.  There is no going back. We encourage all students to take full advantage of every opportunity and do everything possible to have a positive experience every day.

A hallmark of Arrowhead is that our halls, fields, and other facilities have had students around all summer.  It has been great to see our students continuing to grow and engage in various experiences and opportunities such as summer school, fitness training, Senior Flight, music, sport, and a whole gamut of other opportunities.

For easy access and planning, some of our main activities to kick off the year are listed below.  We hope to see everyone out at our great school community events.

Registration Delays

Apologies to all of our families who were caught up by the long lines and delays during registration, especially our freshman families at our South building.  Empire Photography, whom we have worked with for many years without issues, had significant technical issues with their printing software/hardware.  This issue did not occur due to a lack of planning or preparation as the equipment was tested in the days leading up to registration, as well as very early that morning, without issue.  Empire has since reached out with apology and to offer support in any way needed.

This is not the experience we want for our students and families to kick off the year.  Our staff will review all areas of registration and do all we can to ensure these delays for our families continue to be a rare occurrence at Arrowhead.

Any students who were unable to obtain their ID with the athletics pass can bring the receipt or show payment on the Skyward app at the gate.  You do not need to wait in the ticket line.

If you have any questions or needs that were not addressed due to the delays in registration, please reach out to our office staff or administration.

Thanks to all for the patience and understanding.

PTO

Arrowhead High School is looking to launch and develop the first ever, AHS Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).  The very traditional and long-standing national structure works to create a community connection to the school, support and recognize staff, and foster resources to create the best student experiences possible.

If you are interested in joining the AHS PTO, please fill out the Google form linked here with your information.  An email will go out to all parents who are show an interest in being a part of the PTO in early September.

The first meeting will be used to develop a mission and purpose, discuss structures and bylaws, and to establish a governing board.

ARROWHEAD STUDENTS SHOW COLLEGE READINESS THROUGH ADVANCED PLACEMENT RESULTS

Over the summer, our Advanced Placement (AP) students (and teachers) anxiously wait for results of AP scores.  The Advanced Placement program offered by the College Board provides classes taught by high school teachers where students are given a corresponding assessment at the end of the year.  If a student passes the AP test (with a score of 3,4, or 5) they have potential of earning college credit (depending on the college or university).  There have been dozens of studies conducted in recent years that point to the benefits for students who enroll and successfully complete AP coursework.

The scores for our students reflect more than just hard work and effort.  The high number of students who participate in AP reflects a culture of learning at Arrowhead where students want to push themselves in rigorous coursework.  Arrowhead students took a total of 1255 exams last spring with 1,083 of those tests resulting in scores of 3 or higher (86.29%). Arrowhead offers AP classes in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science,  English Language, English Literature, European History, French, Human Geography, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C, Psychology, Spanish, Statistics, Studio Art, US Government and US History.

The success of our AP students reflects strong teaching and learning experiences  in all of our programs, at every level, at Arrowhead. More than the score, the daily habits, work ethic, mind sets and dedication of our students to learn college-level material says a lot about our students and where they want to go!

Arrowhead is continuously focused on college and career preparation for our students.  Although not all colleges and universities accept passing AP scores for college credit, the learning benefits are worth the effort! The Journal of Educational Research, in May of 2015 noted, “Students majoring in nine different academic fields achieved higher college GPAs if they passed the AP exam for their respective introductory course in high school.” This article also noted that an additional benefit of the AP program may be that it helps students explore potential interests and college majors.

At Arrowhead, there is “Something for Everyone”  when it comes to course choices.  We have rigorous, interesting and FUN learning opportunities that match students’ interests and goals. Arrowhead’s  Advanced Placement program is just one of the many to celebrate!

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH CHANGES

Public schools have been serving all students free meals since the COVID-19 pandemic first disrupted K-12 education. In March 2022, Congress rejected calls to keep up the federal funding required to sustain that practice so students will be expected to pay for breakfast and lunch unless they qualify for free/reduced lunch.

2022-2023 Household Application for Free and Reduced Price

In addition, students will no longer be able to pay cash as the cafeteria registers.  Students will need to be sure there is money in their lunch accounts which can be paid online or in person at either of the campus main offices.

New Mental Health Crisis - Dialing Code Launched July 16

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (Lifeline) launched nationwide on July 16. Similar to dialing 911 for medical emergencies, people in emotional distress

or suicidal crisis can call or text 988 and be connected immediately to trained counselors who will listen, provide support and connect them to resources

if necessary.

The three-digit dialing code is new, but the Lifeline is not. Previously known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, callers only reached the 24/7

national crisis hotline by dialing 1-800-273-8255 (TALK). The easy-to-remember dialing code (988) is meant to replace that number; however, callers will

still be connected to the same services, regardless of which number is used. The Lifeline provides services in both English and Spanish.

The Lifeline

Since 2005, the Lifeline has been a network of roughly 200 crisis centers funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse

and Mental Health Services Administration. Since its founding, the Lifeline has received more than 20 million calls from people in distress looking for

help when they needed it most. Nearly 2.4 million calls occurred in 2020 alone, illustrating America’s current mental health crisis.

Spreading the Word About 988

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among preteens and adults aged 25 to 34, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The

Lifeline is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress, including thoughts of suicide,

mental health or substance use crisis, or other emotional struggles. People can also call the Lifeline if they are worried about a loved one who may need

emergency support. Just as Americans know to call 911 in a medical emergency, it’s vital to spread the word about 988 in your own state. This new three-

digit dialing code could provide immediate support during someone’s darkest hour.

Securly Weekly email and Parent Portal

Arrowhead implements a filter and security service to keep our students safe and focused on their school work. Parents and guardians will receive a weekly email after school begins from Securly.com that will show you a snapshot of your child’s online activity while on our network.

If you do not receive an email, your student does not have information to report at this time. If you do not receive an email by mid-September, please contact Securly directly at help@securly.com

To receive your student’s full online activity history, you can create an account in the free Parent Portal. The Parent Portal will contain an Activity Tab, a Flagged Tab, and an Accounts Tab. The parent portal you create will provide you additional information on your student’s online activity.

If you do not wish to receive that weekly email from Securly, simply click on the unsubscribe button in the bottom left corner of the email.

For more information on the Securly Portal, please see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS on our website.
