FROM THE DESK OF:  Laura Myrah, Superintendent

Greetings Arrowhead Community,

With spring elections coming up on April 5, I have been fielding many questions on a few school board-related topics. Below are those questions and answers so everyone is privy to the same information.

Question:  Why are there five school board seats up for election rather than three seats?

Answer:  Typically, three of Arrowhead’s nine school board seats are up for election each year, each for a three-year term. However, on April 5, the three seats in the normal election cycle are up for election (Hartland-Lakeside, North Lake, and Richmond representative seats), and a two-year term seat (Swallow) and a one-year term seat (at-large). These shortened-term seats are up for election because two school board members resigned/retired last winter/spring. At that time and in accordance with state law, the school board appointed temporary board members until the next election. Now, the remainder of each seat’s three-year term will be filled through the electorate’s April 5 vote.

Question:  Can I only vote for the school board seat that represents the K-8 school district wherein I reside?

Answer:  No.  All qualified voters within Arrowhead’s entire 68 square mile residency area may vote for all Arrowhead school board seats; all five open seats (two candidates for each) will appear on your election ballot.

All nine Arrowhead board members make policy decisions with all Arrowhead students in mind, therefore all community members can vote for all seats up for election. The reason why our school board includes two at-large seats and one “representative seat” from each K-8 school district is simply to ensure that all nine school board members don’t happen to reside in the same K-8 district region within our boundaries. Also keep in mind, each K-8 school district has its own school board. Consequently, in addition to all Arrowhead school board vacancies, you will be able to vote for any vacancies on the school board of the K-8 district within whose boundaries you reside.

Question: Where can I find information about each candidate for the Arrowhead School Board?

Answer:  School districts must remain neutral regarding school board elections; no school resources may be spent on campaigning for any candidates. Therefore, Arrowhead’s web page titled “Candidates for School Board Election'' only notes the candidate’s names and does not include biographical information. To learn information about each candidate, you will need to find other sources such as social media pages, local newspaper articles, etc.

In closing, go out and vote, and also go out to enjoy the spring weather that is surely just around the corner, right!?!

Kind regards,

Laura Myrah, Superintendent

UPCOMING SPRING ASSESSMENTS

ACT ASPIRE ASSESSMENT:

Wisconsin requires the ACT Aspire test to be taken by all Freshmen and Sophomores April 4 - 7 ACT Aspire is a summative assessment that measures what students have learned in the areas of  English, Reading, Math, Science, and Writing.

Please note - when FRESHMEN and SOPHOMORE students are NOT testing this week, they are not on campus.  Students may have some learning or work to complete while they are home on those days. Juniors and Seniors are on campus and in session as normal. This approach is used to allow for enough teacher proctors needed as well as rooms for testing.

APRIL 4 - Sophomores with last names A-K will be testing

APRIL 5 - Sophomores with last names L-Z will be testing

APRIL 6 - Freshman with last names starting A-K will be testing

APRIL 7 - Freshman with last names starting L-Z will be testing

WISCONSIN FORWARD EXAM is a state-mandated test taken by Sophomores only.  The Forward Exam is a computer-based assessment that assesses social studies knowledge, skills, and standards. Arrowhead will be administering the test to Sophomores in their social studies classes April 19-22.  Individual teachers will let students know which days they are testing.  Parents and students will receive additional information through SKYLERTS closer to our testing dates.

TESTING OPT-OUT:

Arrowhead remains committed to preparing all of our students for their futures. These tests can serve as one of many indicators we can use to assess student readiness for college and career.  Tests can corroborate what you see on a daily basis or show an area of strength or weakness. Results help you see how your children are doing compared to other children in the state or on the national level.  School scores can help educators see gaps in curriculum and enable us to make improvements for everyone.

If parents determine they will not have their students test and therefore are choosing to “Opt-Out," they must contact the school assessment coordinator for the respective test and include the Director of Learning in the message (Sue Casetta, casetta@arrowheadschools.org). Title the message in the subject line- Testing OPT-OUT

CHANGES TO METHOD TEST PREP COMING!

Method Test Prep is updating their program and re-branding it as METHODIZE.  Method Test Prep is the program Arrowhead students can use to prepare for the ACT (it is connected to Xello accounts).   With the change to METHODIZE  (same company - new and improved format) students who CURRENTLY have a Method Test Prep account can continue working on that account until June 1.  However, after APRIL 1,  no new student accounts can be created in Method Test Prep.  Students new to the program  will be able to create an account in METHODIZE.  For students who have been using the tool, your account information may not move over to the new format on June 1. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Students were notified of this upcoming change on March  30.

CELEBRATIONS!

ARROWHEAD DECA “De-Ices” COMPETITION AT STATE CONFERENCE

Whitmoyer Top In State - Melzer Earns 30 Year Advisor Recognition

AHS Earns Top Community Service  and  Marketing Awards – 22  Qualify for ICDC In Atlanta, GA

Lake Geneva, February 22-24, 2022 – Over 2,500 high school Marketing students from all over Wisconsin came together to compete in the WI DECA (an association of Marketing students) State Career Development Conference held at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva Wisconsin. Students applied everything they have learned through their Marketing classes and DECA events in role plays, comprehensive exams, and projects.

Arrowhead DECA qualified 30 students for the state competition previously from district competition in January. Prior to state competition, these teens had to participate in and win at the district competition. AHS DECA qualifiers spent three days in intense competition to prove just how well they can take what they’ve learned about marketing, management and entrepreneurship and apply it to real-world business situations. In written reports, exams, business presentations, role-plays and computer simulations, these teenagers diagnose business problems and offer realistic, workable solutions.

AHS DECA members devoted many hours, both in the classroom and outside school, to increasing their knowledge of how marketing and business work. Then they spent even more time writing up research reports and business plans, designing marketing campaigns, and polishing their role-playing and presentation skills. They must be prepared to explain how they would handle the real-life business scenarios that DECA’s judges will grill them on during the competition.

In addition to competition, the Arrowhead DECA Chapter was recognized for their outstanding achievement in leadership, community service, and connections with the business world.  This included the Outstanding Community Service award, Acts of Kindness , Trick or Can, Community Service Week, 100+ Hours Award, General Charity Contributor Award and the Top Make A Wish award in the state for most contributions to the Make a Wish Foundation. Earning National Accreditation is the HawksNest School Store earning Gold Level Certification (tops in the country) for excelling in SBE (School Based Enterprise) meeting specific national standards.  The Arrowhead SBE project was chosen to compete at the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, GA.

AHS DECA had an amazing run at state this year, qualifying 24  students for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, GA  April 23-27, 2022.  Highlights from the state competition are as follows: (follow us on Twitter and Instagram @arrowhead_DECA)

In addition, Steve Melzer was recognized for 30 years of service to DECA, between Arrowhead and two high schools before us. Congratulations and thanks to Steve for the dedicated, successful service!

THE AHS EARTH CLUB WILL BEGIN A COMPOSTING PROGRAM AT BOTH CAMPUSES TO HELP REDUCE WASTE!

Arrowhead’s new composting program will start on Monday, April 4th at North campus and Monday, April 11th at South campus!  Students will now be able to place any finished or unwanted fruits and vegetables in a bin at the front of each cafeteria to be used in composting.  Thanks to student, Cassie Kuenn and the Earth Club for making this effort a reality.

SPANISH CAREER FAIR

For their World of Work unit, Mrs. Coraggio, Ms. Psket and Mr. Gliniecki had approximately 210 Spanish III students participate and interview 18 professionals that use Spanish in different careers.  Most guests were at AHS for the morning (periods 2-4), but two Zoomed in from Indiana and California. One AHS alumnus was here to speak to students: Savannah Knaak, who filled our educators' hearts with pride!

A huge thank you to our special guests who took the time to meet with our students!
