FROM THE DESK OF: Adam Kurth, Principal

Happy Holiday (and Egg Nog) Season!

Parent-Teacher Conferences tomorrow!  We look forward to welcoming families into our classrooms as we return to traditional conferences.  Based on feedback from last year, the hope is to provide the ability to have a bit more conversation than virtual conferences allow, but still privacy within the classroom.

What an exciting and accomplished month October was for AHS.  Girls Tennis won State!  Boys Volleyball gave us great excitement finishing as the State Runner-up.  Football was three points away from the State Semifinals.  Girls Swim and Dive dominated sectionals and are headed to State.  Girls Golf advanced to State.  Field Hockey competed in the State Finals.  Boys Cross Country advanced to State.  Girls volleyball and boys soccer advanced to Sectionals and fell just short after having great seasons.  Broadway Company wowed us once again with Shrek the Musical.  The Homecoming parade brought the community together on a misty, chilly night.  Our Band, Hawkettes, and Cheer Team kept us all entertained.  Our food drive efforts dominated that school to the West of us and provided hundreds of meals for families in need.  It is great to be a Warhawk.

On a sad note, we also lost a Warhawk.  Freshman, Natalie Kleemeier died in a senseless and heartbreaking act.   This unnecessary event left a deep wound in our school and community that will never entirely heal.

November is the National Month of Gratitude.  An appropriate time to clarify our priorities, reset perspective, and give thanks to those around us.  Healthy to revisit how much we have to be thankful for in this great school and community.

Thank you for your continued engagement with our school.  Have a great two weeks leading into the break.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held Thursday, November 10th in classrooms from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at both campuses.  Please use this document to locate the teachers you wish to see as the location during conferences may differ from the location on your child(ren) Skyward schedule.

There is no sign up for conferences.  In response to feedback from last year’s conferences, we hope that the unscheduled time and access to teachers in classrooms is found beneficial.

We ask that you please print and/or view your student’s schedule ahead of time so you know which teachers you want to speak with.  You are also welcome to bring your student(s) with you.   There will be refreshments at each campus in the cafeteria for parents.

We look forward to the evening and connecting with our families.

Anti-Bullying Student Video

The administrative team recently presented on our efforts toward the best student culture possible at AHS to our School Board.  Within that presentation, was a video submitted to our Anti-Bullying Message competition that many students participated in.  Below, we have linked the video so that our families can see one of the impressive and thoughtful creations from our students, Siya Sinha.

Warhawk Interact Football Food Drive

Thank you for all of the support given to our Warhawk Interact Football Food Drive October 14th!  For the first time, Arrowhead won and we couldn’t have done it without your support!

The final total was 17,401 meals provided by Arrowhead and 6,545 meals provided by Oconomowoc.  The last time we did this drive in 2019-2020, Oconomowoc won 10,384 to 6,637 meals.  That is a combined total of 17,021 meals which Arrowhead eclipsed by itself this year!  We are SO proud of what our school accomplished this year and hope that we can build on it again next year!

Congratulations and thank you all again for helping to make this competition a success for so many people

How to Become a Canvas Parent Observer

Participate in your child’s education by becoming a Canvas observer. Canvas is Arrowhead’s course management system and parents are invited to follow along in their student’s learning. Here are the steps to sign up for an account:

At Open House, 1st through 4th period teachers will also have pairing codes available if needed. As observers, parents are linked to a student or multiple students and are able to view data from observed student(s) including grades, assignments, and events. Here is an OBSERVER PERMISSION GUIDE which covers what an observer can see in more detail.

Although assignments can be graded within Canvas, this does not often represent the full picture of the student’s progress. Skyward should be regarded as the most accurate grading system for Arrowhead students.

Additional information on becoming a Canvas Observer can be found here. If you have any other questions regarding Canvas or need additional help signing up to be an observer, please reach out to Donna Smith (smith@arrowheadschools.org).

ATTENDANCE UPDATES

OUTSIDE ATHLETICS/CLUBS

Please note that sports, clubs, or activities outside of school cannot be exempted by the school and will count against the State allotted 10 days of absence. Once those days are met, students can only be excused for a medical reason with medical documentation. These absences will be either excused (when under 10 days) or unexcused (when over 10 days) as this is not an absence for medical reasons.  Student missing for this reason beyond the 10 days, must complete all work within the same timeline as the other students, no extension of the due date will be given including a test or quizAn exemption for these types of events can only be made when the event is one that is considered rare and significantly above the activity of the student's peers per administrative approval.

COVID

Students who are absent due to COVID will be marked as excused due to illness as long as they are within the allotted 10 days of absence per State law.  The absence can be exempted (not count towards those 10) with a copy of an official positive COVID test result (home tests will not be accepted for the exemption) or proof of a doctor visit.  Once a student is at or over the 10 allotted days, all absences are unexcused except for medical reasons when accompanied with medical documentation.  Per CDC, we are recommending that students remain home for 5 days from the onset of symptoms.

AHS Programs Financial Support

School funding is always a challenging world to navigate.  Each year, schools see a set of opportunities with costs associated with them that are unable to be funded by the current state funding and the AHS budget.  We often have families with the means to support such opportunities who have expressed that there isn't an avenue to be made aware or to donate directly to a need.   Each newsletter, we will list opportunities for our community to consider supporting.  There is never an expectation, only an appreciation for considering.

Current Considerations

Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra -  We are fortunate to host the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Ken-David Masur, Music Director performing for our school and community.  This is an incredibly rare opportunity for our performing arts and other students to have this experience.  We continue to seek sponsors for the student performance to mitigate the cost of hosting.  Please see the linked information and contact Adam Kurth at kurth@arrowheadschools.org if interested

The Warhawk Rise Program - We are looking for a  committed benefactor who would like to support this great event.  A new program we are developing at AHS that will recognize any student who has improved their grade point average by .75 or better from one semester to the next.  (EX: from a 2.5 Fall semester to a 3.25 Spring semester)  This is a significant achievement by students who put in great efforts toward success that may not always receive the recognition they deserve.  The annual cost of this program runs about $4,000 each year and includes a semi-formal celebration brunch with their families invited and and gift bags recognizing their efforts.  Please contact Principal Adam Kurth at kurth@arrowheadschools.com or North Counselor, Kelly Matthias at matthias@arrowheadschools.org to support.

Arrowhead Scholarship Fund - This amazing program provides an incredible amount of scholarships each year thanks to the generosity of our community.  Families and companies have the ability to provide direction as to how their scholarship would be decided and awarded.  Please see the ASF Donor Webpage for more information!

Thank you for making it all the way to the end of our newsletter!

Sorry!  This fell into our newsletter and I can't seem to figure out how to delete it.

Have a great few weeks and Thanksgiving break.
