FROM THE DESK OF:   Adam Kurth, Principal

Monday is May.  Let that sink in.

Every month seems to have it's own form of "busy."  May is no exception.  All of our spring sports and activities are in the heart of their season, AP tests are days away, and end of the year events are scheduled and planned.

One of the biggest end-of-year events is our graduation ceremony for the Class of 2023!  To our senior parents, you have one month left in your student's K-12 education.  In 'parent-time,' they were just shuffling off to kindergarten last year.  Listed below is the first dose of graduation information for our families.  We'll send additional updates as we continue to get closer to the end of the year.

May 8th-12th serves as National Teacher Appreciation Week!  We are fortunate to have so many great educators working with our kids each and every day.  Our newly established PTO, with information below, is taking steps to recognize our teaching staff.  Please see their information and links to help treat our teachers to a special 'thank you' during their week.

We know that treats and other tokens of appreciation are welcomed by staff and help them feel appreciated.  We also know that one of the best ways to show appreciation is through a simple message of thanks.  We ask that any family who feels it's appropriate, fill out this form to recognize teachers who have impacted your children over the years and share that message with our staff.

Happy last full month of school!  Come out to South Campus tonight to support our Special Education Program Fundraiser, The Lobster Boil!  (food and auctions!)

GRADUATION YARD SIGN INFORMATION

Parents,

Every year at this time, a portion of our senior class elect to participate in the annual Nerf Wars. While we understand that there are many traditions and rites of passage that occur of the next few weeks and month, please know that this event is not sponsored, managed, or condoned by Arrowhead High School. We ask your support in ensuring our students are safe and act in a manner representative of our school and community.

Please see the message from our School Resource Officer posted below:

"Nerf Wars" has returned and many AHS students are participating. 'Nerf Wars', involves the use of toy weapons, in which players have "shootouts" with other players. This activity often occurs outside in a public setting. Unfortunately, many of those participating tend to push boundaries that can result in a law enforcement response. Law enforcement response is likely to occur after a citizen complaint regarding the following, often criminal, violations: trespassing, disorderly conduct, battery, public nudity, noise complaints, car accidents, etc.

In addition, a toy weapon, if altered to be perceived as a real weapon, could result in law enforcement officers using deadly force.

A law enforcement response is not the only outcome, if you are an athlete and/or a student in a competitive club, you risk the loss of eligibility in these activities.

Depending on the citizen complaint and circumstance, law enforcement response can/will result in a citation, criminal charge referral, and/or arrest. I highly encourage all parents/guardians to have a conversation regarding the appropriate use of 'toy weapons' in a public setting. 'Nerf Wars' can be a fun, harmless activity for high school students.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or your local law enforcement agency. This email will be sent via Skyward to all parents, so I apologize if you received it twice.

ARROWHEAD HIGH SCHOOL

BOARD OF EDUCATION

In the months ahead, the Arrowhead community will hear increasingly more information on the troubling state of our school budget, particularly as it relates to the inadequate state funding of many - not all - schools in Wisconsin.

As our legislators give final considerations for the upcoming biennial budget, to be signed and effective by July 1, it is important that legislators hear from constituents advocating for budgetary needs. To that end, Arrowhead's school board and members of the administrative team have been active to impress upon our legislators the need to change the manner in which public education is funded. To follow are the important activities that have been undertaken to advocate for our school's financial future:

Meeting with Senator Chris Kapenga and Representative Cindi Duchow

On June 8, 2022, members of the school board and administrative team met with Senator Kapenga and Representative Duchow at our district office. Jeff Gross, Director of Business Services, provided an overview of how the revenue limit funding equation, in effect for 30 years, has caused our inability to keep pace with our school's operating costs. The Arrowhead team appealed to our legislators to change the funding equation and/or have revenue limits that are indexed to the rate of inflation.

WASB Capital Day

On March 22, 2023, the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) held its Capital Day in Madison. Lynn Vogeltanz, School Board Member, represented Arrowhead High School at this event. WASB presented information on the 2023-25 state budget and legislation; this was followed by a panel discussion, wherein members of the Education Committee provided perspective on Wisconsin's budget. Attendees then met with their elected officials/staff. Board Member Vogeltanz, along with several other representatives from our district's K-8's, Lake Country area schools and Hamilton-Sussex, met with members of Rep. Cindi Duchow's office. The messaging from advocates was concise and consistent: the inadequate and disparate funding of public schools for 30 years has created budget crises that negatively impact the education of students, and the new budget must rectify these deficiencies.

Joint Finance Committee's Budget Hearing

On April 5, 2023, the Joint Finance Committee, comprised of both Senate and Assembly members, held a budget hearing in Waukesha. The purpose of this hearing was to provide an opportunity for constituents to advocate for state budget concerns in advance of the biennial budget adoption. Arrowhead had a strong presence at the hearing, as Jeff Gross and school board members Kim Schubert, Chris Farris and Craig Thompson attended. We were joined by 20+ representatives from other area schools, presenting messaging and requests for action that were overall consistent in content. Due to time constraints, only Jeff Gross and Kim Schubert were allowed to testify, despite Chris Farris also having prepared a letter of testimony. Please see the attachment for these three testimonial documents.

It is important for everyone in the Arrowhead community to understand how public schools are funded, how disparate and inadequate the funding is for Arrowhead, and the need for many voices to speak out in an effort to address this issue. Please read the School Board section of the Arrowhead Advisor in May to learn how members of the community can become involved in this legislative advocacy process.

Congratulations to Tripp Walsh for being selected as one of the four Division 1 boys selected for the very prestigious 2023 WIAA Scholar Athlete Award! He helped the Warhawks win back to back team track and field state championships and a team sectional championship in basketball. Congratulations to Tripp!

Is off to a good start to their season. They swept Muskego in a conference dual and went 3-2 in the two-day Coach Steinbach Classic tournament in Brookfield.

Need High Speed Internet?

The FCC has a new map showing where high speed service is - and is not - available across the country.

Make sure the National Broadband Map is accurate by checking your home or small business. Funding is available to provide high speed Internet in Wisconsin. Make sure your home is correctly represented here!

Wisconsin residents can take action:

To ensure valid challenges are incorporated into the map before federal funding allocations are made, the public are encouraged to submit challenges by January 13, 2023. Please spread the word.

AHS Fundraising

AHS Programs Financial Support

School funding is always a challenging world to navigate.  Each year, schools see a set of opportunities with costs associated with them that are unable to be funded by the current state funding and the AHS budget.  We often have families with the means to support such opportunities who have expressed that there isn't an avenue to be made aware or to donate directly to a need.   Each newsletter, we will list opportunities for our community to consider supporting.  There is never an expectation, only an appreciation for considering.

Current Considerations

The Warhawk Rise Program - We are still looking for a  committed benefactor who would like to support this great event!  A new program we are developing at AHS that will recognize any student who has improved their grade point average by .75 or better from one semester to the next.  (EX: from a 2.5 Fall semester to a 3.25 Spring semester)  This is a significant achievement by students who put in great efforts toward success that may not always receive the recognition they deserve.  The annual cost of this program runs about $4,000 each year and includes a semi-formal celebration brunch with their families invited and and gift bags recognizing their efforts.  Please contact Principal Adam Kurth at kurth@arrowheadschools.com or North Counselor, Kelly Matthias at matthias@arrowheadschools.org to support.

Arrowhead Scholarship Fund - This amazing program provides an incredible amount of scholarships each year thanks to the generosity of our community.  Families and companies have the ability to provide direction as to how their scholarship would be decided and awarded.  Please see the ASF Donor Webpage for more information!

Arrowhead KEEP LOVE IN TENNIS group is leading a fundraising effort to update our tennis facilities.  See below for their Derby Party Fundraiser!

Support the AHS Tennis Teams and their tennis court fundraising efforts!

The Hartland Area Food Pantry is available to assist all residents of the Arrowhead School district. Proof of residency can be in the form of any piece of mail that shows a current address in the district.

The pantry is located at 553-555 S. Industrial Drive in Hartland.  It is open on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m.

Residents can visit the pantry twice a month for four months or 8 visits.  After that time proof of need is necessary.

Please call the pantry at 262-367-6373 during the above hours if you have any questions, they would love to help.
