FROM THE DESK OF:   Adam Kurth, Principal

It has been a busy 28 days.  The completion of another successful and entertaining ASF Trivia Night, Valentine's Day, unpredictable weather, Superintendent search/survey/focus group/interviews/hire, Mid-Winter Break, ACT registration for Juniors, the taking of the Senior photo for our soon to be graduates, and Parent-Teacher Conferences around the corner (March 2).  We're ok with February being the shortest month.  The second to last event always strikes a chord with our families.  Senior parents, you have three months left until your student is a graduate!

Although all activities are important for our Arrowhead Community, the Superintendent focus group and interviews were certainly critical to our continued Tradition of Excellence. It is truly a significant loss with Superintendent Laura Myrah retiring this summer, but we are all happy for her as she begins the next chapter of her life and of course, she will always be a Warhawk!

As we transition to the next leader of AHS, we are excited to welcome Conrad Farner to our TeAm!  Please see the press release and comments from Board President, Kim Schubert included below.

Congrats to our performing arts crew on their successful spring play and concerts, our many athletic teams and clubs competing in their State competitions, and all of our students for their efforts throughout first semester.  We look forward to March Madness and welcome Spring Break and the spring weather that follows.

Happy March.

Spring VIRTUAL Parent Teacher Conferences

Thursday, March 2nd ~ 4:30 - 7:30 pm

Arrowhead High School welcomes all families to our Spring 2023 Parent-Teacher Conferences.  After positive feedback from families last year, we will again offer virtual conferencing for parent convenience and privacy.  If you are not able to meet with all teachers or would like additional time, please connect with those teachers and we will be happy to accommodate.  Sign up information can be found HERE as well as sent via Skylert on Monday, February 27th.

Arrowhead Spring 2023 Testing Information

The State of Wisconsin requires schools to administer accountability assessments in high school.  For the 2022-2023 school year, the assessments administered  include the Forward Exam (10th grader Social Studies), PreACT secure (NEW, formally ACT Aspire for 9th and 10th graders) and ACT (11th graders) .

As assessment dates approach, more detailed information will be sent specifically to grade level students and parents regarding times and information related to that assessment.  For now,  we wanted to make you aware of some changes to the bell schedules/calendar in order to properly administer the required assessments.

For your reference, here is some information  REGARDING ACT ASSESSMENTS and State Accountability assessments in general.

Below is a schedule of events related to state assessments. Please review at your convenience and make note of calendar or bell schedule changes in this link.

Buses WILL RUN on their USUAL schedule on those days.  Any student who rides the bus in the morning or needs to be dropped off to school earlier than 10:15am will report to a supervised study hall.

WHY THE DELAYED START FOR April 17- April 20 because of PreACT Secure?

The PreACT secure assessment is 155 minutes (including breaks) and must be administered in one sitting. Per ACT rules, the test must be started by 10 AM. That means we can only administer the test to half a class per day in the testing window.

ARROWHEAD HIGH SCHOOL

BOARD OF EDUCATION

It is with great pleasure that the Arrowhead School Board announces Mr. Conrad Farner as our next Superintendent of Arrowhead High School! We extend to him a hearty congratulations and a warm welcome to the Arrowhead community as he assumes his new leadership role on August 1. He brings to Arrowhead a wealth of experience, a history of success in his career and a genuine passion that motivates his high expectations for student achievement. Please read more from the Arrowhead press release copied below.

At Arrowhead, we often speak in terms of a “One Team” philosophy. The superintendent selection process exemplifies the power of the application of this philosophy, as all stakeholder groups were involved: students, parents, community members, staff, teachers, administration and the School Board. The process was thorough, transparent and highly collaborative and our “One Team" successfully achieved our goal. Because the process had been so well defined and executed, it allowed the team to be nimble enough to push up the interviewing schedule of our top candidates. The advantage in doing this was that Arrowhead was able to make an offer to the best of the best applicants, potentially before other area schools had the opportunity. From initial planning until the contract was signed, the Arrowhead community proved the power of working together towards a goal. The School Board extends a sincere THANK YOU to the many that were involved in this process.

It is important for our school community to understand another significant aspect of this recent accomplishment. When a school board is charged with hiring for a vacancy in a leadership position, it chooses one of two typical options: it hires a search firm to take on the job of candidate recruitment leading to selection - at an anticipated cost of $20,000-$30,000 or more, or the school assumes the rigors and challenges of the process and manages it alone. Clearly, our “One Team” chose the latter. We are doubly proud that not only will Arrowhead reap the rewards of the great superintendent we have chosen, but we also placed no additional financial burdens on our taxpayers for this recruitment process.

The School Board looks forward to the arrival of Mr. Farner, to continue to collaboratively serve the students and community of Arrowhead.

“No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” - H.E. Luccock

PRESS RELEASE

The Arrowhead Unified High School District selects Conrad Farner as the next Superintendent of School

The  Board of Education is proud to announce Conrad Farner as the next Superintendent of the Arrowhead Unified High School District.  Mr. Farner will begin August 1st.  Current superintendent, Laura Myrah is retiring on August 7th after eight years serving the district.

During the search process, the school community was surveyed to identify key qualities of the next AHS Superintendent.  The district also held a Superintendent Search Focus Group consisting of parents, staff, and students to identify the current successes and future hopes of the superintendent of the Arrowhead Union School District.  All of this information was used to support the Board selecting of Mr. Farner from a pool of 13 candidates.  The top candidates from the pool interviewed with committees consisting of staff, parents and community leaders, administrators, and the school board where Mr. Farner quickly surfaced as the top candidate.  Mr. Farner’s extensive and diverse experience in education, wealth of knowledge in recruiting and retaining quality educators, and high expectations for learning and opportunities for kids stood out to all involved.

Board President, Kim Schubert shared that  "The Arrowhead School Board is privileged to welcome Mr. Conrad Farner in his leadership role within the Arrowhead community. His passion for student success is evident in his history of collaborative relationship-building, establishment of respectful culture and high expectations for student achievement. The unanimous Board decision speaks to our confidence in Mr. Farner's ability to immediately and effectively provide educational leadership and promote even greater student success at Arrowhead High School."

For the past 10 years, Mr. Farner has served as the Director of Human Resources for the Cedarburg School District.  Prior to his tenure in Cedarburg, Farner spent time as Superintendent and Human Resources Director in the Greenfield School District.  He began his career in education as a middle school teacher in the West Allis School district, followed by stints as middle school principal and Director of Technology & Assessment.  In addition to his school leadership, Farner served as a football, basketball, and baseball coach early in his career.  Mr. Farner brings a clear wealth of experience and knowledge to the position.

A Waukesha South High School Graduate, Farner earned his undergraduate degree from UW-Lacrosse.  He went on to complete his Masters studies and Educational Doctorate (All But Dissertation) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  His familiarity and fondness of the area continued to support his selection for the role.

Farner shared,  “I could not be more excited to be joining the Arrowhead Team.  Having admired so much about the school and community for so many years, there was no way I was not going to pursue the opportunity.  The incredibly warm and welcoming environment created and maintained throughout the hiring process further speaks to the quality of the Arrowhead High School organization.  The students, teachers, administrators, parents and Board members truly made it feel like I was more than just a guest.

I look forward to providing collaborative leadership and service as we tackle the challenges facing public schools.  The goal is to continue doing the amazing things that are happening, while also striving to do even greater things...with the focus always being on helping our students prepare for their futures as leaders in this world.  I am so appreciative to have this opportunity!”

Arrowhead High School and its school community look forward to welcoming Mr. Farner to the district in August and watching his leadership build on the strong foundation for success that defines AHS.

Lions of Delafield donates to Arrowhead Manufacturing Program for Personal Protective Equipment

Technology Education has transformed over the past ten years, including a revitalization to excite and expose students to the possible careers that await them when they graduate. The technology engineering labs reflect modern manufacturing, and are no longer dirty, dark and dangerous. “We have clean organized labs, with high tech equipment that reflects our industry partners.” says Anthony Christian. The job market has fueled that change as it has a growing need for talented individuals to fill positions in manufacturing and automation. “We have been able to capture the vision of our business partners and make changes not only in the physical space but also in curriculum and student experiences. Our goal is to provide the best experience possible while working in a safe environment.”

The Delafield Lions club has generously donated funds for safety glasses and hearing protection for our students who work in those spaces. Each year the Technology Education Department purchases 450+ sets of Z.87 safety glasses, disposable hearing protection, and vinyl gloves for our students who go through the Manufacturing and Automotive labs at Arrowhead. These essential safety items allow students to enter into the lab, participate, and practice skills in a manufacturing environment safely. This also sets the standard of safety, of how we expect them to protect themselves in any dangerous environment. Besides having the correct PPE to protect themselves, education is necessary to understand the potential risks they assume when operating equipment in the lab. “Protecting their vision and hearing is one of our highest priorities that we hope transcends after high school and into their future careers. We thank the Lions for their donation and support for this safety initiative!” says Anthony Christian, AHS manufacturing instructor.

Please mark your calendars for The Lake Country Arts Festival on Saturday July 8th hosted by the Delafield Lions Club. All proceeds go to support  local charities and schools like AHS.

AHS Programs Financial Support

School funding is always a challenging world to navigate.  Each year, schools see a set of opportunities with costs associated with them that are unable to be funded by the current state funding and the AHS budget.  We often have families with the means to support such opportunities who have expressed that there isn't an avenue to be made aware or to donate directly to a need.   Each newsletter, we will list opportunities for our community to consider supporting.  There is never an expectation, only an appreciation for considering.

Current Considerations

The Warhawk Rise Program - We are looking for a  committed benefactor who would like to support this great event!  A new program we are developing at AHS that will recognize any student who has improved their grade point average by .75 or better from one semester to the next.  (EX: from a 2.5 Fall semester to a 3.25 Spring semester)  This is a significant achievement by students who put in great efforts toward success that may not always receive the recognition they deserve.  The annual cost of this program runs about $4,000 each year and includes a semi-formal celebration brunch with their families invited and and gift bags recognizing their efforts.  Please contact Principal Adam Kurth at kurth@arrowheadschools.com or North Counselor, Kelly Matthias at matthias@arrowheadschools.org to support.

Arrowhead Scholarship Fund - This amazing program provides an incredible amount of scholarships each year thanks to the generosity of our community.  Families and companies have the ability to provide direction as to how their scholarship would be decided and awarded.  Please see the ASF Donor Webpage for more information!
