Blurting Out- Calm and Erupting Volcanoes

This week in social group, students reviewed the topic of blurting out and what it means to blurt out. We recalled strategies learned in the story My Mouth is a Volcano! by Julia Cook.

Then, students brainstormed ideas to have a calm volcano (being good listeners) and having an erupting volcano (blurting out).

Next, students roll played scenarios of calm and erupting volcanoes:

  • Calling out answers
  • Talking with friends while teacher is talking
  • Raising hand to talk
  • Making the connection sign and not calling out
  • Using the strategy of taking a deep breath and blowing out the blurts

After each scenario, students discussed what they noticed and what was good about it or what needed improvement.

Finally, students were given an assessment. The teacher read scenarios and students needed to decide whether it was calm or erupting.
