Our new unit in social group focuses on winning and losing. We started the unit by reading a story called, "Sally Sore Loser" by Frank J. Sileo.
We then discussed how Sally behaved when she lost a game and how it affected her relationship with her peers. We brainstormed some way we could be a good winner and a good loser. We also talked about what it looks like to be a bad winner and a "sore" loser.
We came up with ways of what to do if we lose a game and how we can still act appropriately. We talked about giving high fives, saying "good game!", trying your best, or taking deep breaths if we are upset.
We then practiced playing a game and losing and how we should react. Students had a chance to play tic-tac-toe or a finger basketball game and practice appropriate reactions to losing. They all did such a great job with this! Next week we will role play scenarios and the students will decide if they were a good or bad winner or a good loser or a sore loser and how we can react appropriately.
