Hello Students and Parents!
While we are embarking on our new journey of distance learning, we will still be providing social skills instruction!
Check your student's odyssey e-mail for the link to join our classroom. Our class code is: e4ao73m.
Each week, one of your teachers will post a video and a link to an activity you can complete at home on google classroom. If you have any questions about our activities, please feel free to use the google classroom page to communicate with us (Mrs. Kimyachi and Miss Camiel), and we will get back to you.

Expected vs. unexpected behaviors.
Students discussed what behaviors were expected of themselves and others while in a group. Some of these expectations included: sitting with the group, facing the teacher, making comments only about what the group is talking about (staying on topic), and using good eye contact. Some of the unexpected behaviors discussed included: lying on the floor, turning bodies around, saying off-topic comments, and not looking at people in the group. The group discussed how it can be distracting when unexpected behaviors are displayed. Students mentioned that it can also be difficult to learn when these behaviors are occurring. Students participated in an activity where they determined whether a behavior was expected or unexpected. In addition, they gave corrective feedback on how to improve these behaviors.
This week in social group the students reviewed expected and unexpected behaviors in the classroom.
The students received their social group folders. Inside is a handout of what we worked on and a challenge to complete and return for next Tuesday.
What are behaviors you would expect to see of yourself or others in a group?
What are behaviors you would NOT expect to see of yourself or others in a group?
Challenge Questions: List ways you can show expected behaviors in the classroom.
This week in social group the students reviewed the 4 different zones from the Zones of Regulation Curriculum. They were given different emotions and they needed to identify which color the emotion would be. They students did a wonderful job showing their listening and participating skills during our small group lesson.
At home this week, ask your child the following questions:
2. How will it help you understand your classmates better?

This week in social group, the students learned strategies to be assertive.
The students started by reviewing focusing attention, listening, and using self-talk (strategies we have learned over the past few weeks). Next they played a game called "Doodle Dance." Where they needed to match a doodle to a dance move.
After, they discussed a scenario about a boy who was feeling sad, mad, and/or frustrated because he did't understand what was happening in the lesson. The students discussed how he could be assertive and ask for help.
Next, the students role played how to be assertive. They were given different situations and needed to state who they would ask for help and what they would say.
The students ended the class by playing a second game of "Doodle Dance."

This week in social group, the students learned strategies to identify feelings.
The students started by making a mad face. They identified how they knew someone's face would look made. They students did the same for a happy face.
After, they discussed different scenarios about a stuffed animal that was jealous, a boy who was surprised, a girl who was sad, and another who felt disgusted.
Students talked a lot about how facial and body clues can help up to figure out how others feel. Knowing how other people feel help us to get along with others.

This week in social group, the students learned strategies use self-talk to help them focus and stay on task.
The students discussed a scenario about a girl who was trying to focus, but there were many distractions in class. The group discussed how it was hard for the girl to learn and what she could have done. Some examples from the discussion were to tell the teacher, move your seat, and to use self-talk to remind yourself to focus and listen.
The students did an excellent job of participating in the discussion and coming up with solutions.

This week in social group, the students learned strategies to focus their attention and to listen at school.
The students discussed a scenario about children attending to a lesson in school. They played a game where they needed to practice listening to one character via a "simon says" style game. They finished by listening to "The Leaner Song."
There was no handout this week to reinforce skills at home.
This week in social group, the students learned strategies to show respectful behaviors at school.

Dear Family,
Your child will be learning a lot this year in social group—and he or she will need your help! Each week, your child will bring home a folder with a home link activity that goes with our weekly lesson. The home activity is a simple and fun way for you to see what skills your child is working on. Please send back these activities in the folder once completed. These will also be posted on our websites.
If you have any questions about the social group or are looking for other activities to use with your child based on our weekly lessons, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills that lead to success in school and in life.
Sincerely,
Lisa Kimyachi Shayna Camiel
