Distance Learning!

Hello Students and Parents!

While we are embarking on our new journey of distance learning, we will still be providing social skills instruction!

Check your student's odyssey e-mail for the link to join our classroom. Our class code is: ocxwruk.

Each week, one of your teachers will post a video and a link to an activity you can complete at home on google classroom. If you have any questions about our activities, please feel free to use the google classroom page to communicate with us (Mrs. Kimyachi, Miss Camiel, and Ms. Conyers), and we will get back to you.

This week students continued to work on what to do if there was an accident. The students role played scenarios of how to say sorry. The students also had a brief discussion about how accidents can happen to ourself.

The big take away for the students was to say your sorry and to remember that accidents happen and it is something that we did not mean to do.

This week students learned that an accident is when you do something that you didn't mean to do. The students looked at different scenarios and brainstormed what they could do if there was an accident. The students discussed why it is important to say "I'm sorrry." when you can an acccident. They also learned to tell the other person that it was an accident and to ask if they are okay.

This week students worked on if it is okay to have the same of different feelings from somebody else. The students learned that it is okay for people to have different feelings about the same thing. The students did a great job of turning and talking and role playing with peers how to state their feelings. When given different scenarios they stated how they felt and what to do if you disagree.

This week students started Unit 2, which focuses on empathy. Students began talking about feelings and learned that feelings or emotions can impact our face and body. Students had a discussion around determining how another person feels by looking at their face or body. For example, when someone is pouting or has their head down, they might be feeling sad. Students discussed times they felt an emotion such as surprised or happy. We also reviewed what their face or body did when experiencing these emotions. For instance, when students felt happy they smiled. Students were then given scenarios and determined how they might feel in those particular situations.

This week in social group, the students learned the strategy of being assertive.

We discussed a scenario of what to do when we are stuck or confused in the classroom. We explained the meaning of the word assertive and how we can ask for help.

The students learned the following steps to be assertive:

  • Face the person you are talking to.
  • Keep your head up and your shoulders back.
  • Use a calm voice.
  • Use respectful words.

The students then practiced asking for help and being assertive when given different scenarios.

This week in social group, the students learned the strategy of using self-talk to help them focus and stay on task.

The students discussed using their attento-o-scope, ignoring distracting behaviors, and using self talk (repeating the directions) to help them stay focused in class.

The students did an excellent job of participating in the discussion and coming up with solutions.

No social group because of Veteran's Day.

November 4, 2019

This week in social group, the students learned strategies to focus and follow directions to help remember all the steps of what they need to do!

We reviewed using our attent-o-scopes.

Cup hands around each eye like binoculars.
Say "focus" or "listen" to switch on the attent-o-scope.
Put down the atent-o-scope, but pretend it is still there and listen.

Next, the students played a game of "follow follow" where they needed to follow one and two step directions. They also needed to make sure they were only listening to the "person giving directions" and to ignore distractions.

After, the students discussed a scenario about following directions. They were given a strategy to repeat the direction in their head.
