During the first few weeks of advisory students learned about the executive functioning curriculum they will be studying this year. In small groups, students discussed what executive functioning is, why it is important, and what it means to them. Next, they previewed the 10 skills we will be studying in depth over the course of the year; planning, organization, time management, task initiation, self-control, metacognition, attention, working memory, flexibility, and perseverance. The students were excited to be introduced to their interactive notebooks where they will keep all their work for the year.

Students met to look at their individual grades and come up with a goal they would like to accomplish this year. It was wonderful listening to the students reflect on struggles they have encountered in the past and brainstorm ways to persevere through these challenges this school year. Some examples students came up with were keeping their lockers, binders, and desks organized, writing down homework, and participating more in class!
