05. High School Advisors

You are given a faculty advisor who is charged with guiding you through The New School, both academically and with regard to your relationship to the community and other community members. Your advisor also acts as the link between the school and your parents or guardians, keeping them informed of your overall progress, scheduling, academic issues, social issues, etc.

As possible, your advisor will continue with you throughout high school. This helps the advisor develop a strong, supportive relationship with you and your parents and gives the advisor a chance to really get to know you and understand your needs.

HS Advisors:

Maintain an on-going relationship with each student in their advisory, listening to your frustrations, problems, ideas, goals, etc.
Keep track of your schedule and your credits, making sure you are progressing realistically toward graduation. If you want to change a class you must consult your advisor, who will outline the necessary steps and provide the course change form. All requests for changes to your schedule need to be returned to your advisor, then approved and signed by your parents or guardians. You will then give the form to the High School Director.
Help you develop your portfolio, which needs to be completed each year through your junior year. During the first three quarters, you will be involved in regular advisory discussions concerning the different Essential Skills and the types of class items that you may want to include in your portfolio. Your advisor can help you choose items to include, and will give you the reflection forms you need to complete your portfolio.
Help you as you lead your student/parent/advisor portfolio conference each year.
Act as your central communication point for the faculty and your parents.

Every student must check in with his/her advisor at the start of ET. You are expected to meet with your advisor frequently throughout the school year, during ET and at other times as needed. Thursday Essential Time is designated for weekly mandatory advisory meetings.
