One of the most important concepts that I have learned this semester is understanding value, placement and proportions. I found that I used all three of these concepts in one assignment which was the imitation drawing. In this assignment we had to imitate the drawing of a famous artist, this required not only using a different hatching technique but also required placement and proportion for accuracy. I found that placement and value was most important in creating a convincing still life. In the final still life drawing we had to take on the challenge of using a different hatching technique again. For this assignment I used controlled doodles to create value in the drawing. I had never thought of using this technique before but, after experimenting with it I found it to be a very good technique to use when adding value and dimension to a still life. I was able to improve these skills throughout the whole semester and I will continue to use these skills in the future.
I put hard work into all of my assignments but the two that stand out to me the most are the imitation drawings. These drawings challenged me to use different hatching techniques and required me to focus on accuracy and to draw a scene I wouldn't have normally chosen to draw. While drawing these I came across many challenges such as value, placement, proportion and perception. In these two drawings I mainly used graphite and charcoal; these were materials that I was already familiar with, unlike the style and scene of the drawing. Once completed I was very proud of my work. I overcame all challenges presented to me when creating these value drawings with the skills learned throughout the semester.
