Essential Question: What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still life drawing?
Purpose:
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
Reflection:
For my final still life drawing I use those marks that mostly resemble the marks of Vincent Van Gough. I went layer by layer adding more value to the drawing using controlled scribbles. These scribbles I believe replicate the marks that Van Gough uses by using very twisted and curvy pen strokes. By using this method I was able to put value into my drawing.
I noticed that given the longer amount of time I was able to accurately draw out the placement of objects and their proportions. I noticed a great improvement in my drawing when more value was added to the still life.
The skills necessary for creating a convincing still life drawing are perspective, proportion and value. All of these skills can be improved by free hand drawing a reference drawing from an artist that uses your desired pen or brush strokes. This will greatly improve your understanding of proportions. Taking on the challenge of drawing from a 2 point perspective will also greatly improve your judgment on perspective. Lastly creating a value scale using different marking such as hatching, cross hatching, and controlled scribbling. By doing this you will understand how to shade a space with the marking of your choice. All these skills are what you need to create a very convincing still life drawing.
