Reflection on Work
When starting on the piece I began with a sketch of the skull that I was observing. From there I was able to begin laying down charcoal. I first began with the jaw of the skull adding details to the teeth and focusing on shadows. Next, although intimidating, I begin chipping away at the rest of the skull. I focus more on the shadows that fell on the skull to give it a 3-dimensional look. I also focused heavily on my blending making sure that the shadow have a smooth transition from dark to light. After completing the skull, neck, and ribcage I moved to my imaginary element, from my thumbnail sketches I knew I wanted to add plants climbing up through the skeleton to add life back into the piece. I chose all plant species that are known to be poisonous to tie back into the main focus of the piece - the skeleton - the plant most noticeable would be mistletoe, a plant with a beautiful appearance and a beautiful tradition. Mistletoe, however, when consumed is deadly. I chose this plant because historically, mistletoe represents romance, fertility, and vitality it can be fatal. I took my time with the placement of the plants to insure that they look as though they had grown there. Overall, this piece presented a challenge and I look forward to more projects like this in the future.
