Purpose:
Learning how to use a large range of motion and starting to work on a larger scale.
Using gesture drawing to capture the essence of an object.
Reinforcing observational drawing skills.
Exploring the use of new mediums.
When I initially learned about the assignment I was anxious about capturing the depth of the nest. At the beginning of the project, I started by blocking out the large shadows with a small sponge brush than continuing to add shape around the shadows. I was then able to add contrast and depth to the painting with watered-down white acrylic paint. This step really pulled the piece together by adding the illusion of depth I was then finally able to work on smaller details like the ends of the branches and smaller sticks that were flaking off the nest to tie everything together.
