Functional Competencies

Functional competencies serve as the building blocks for core competencies and describe the combinations of skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are required to succeed in a specific position. Different combinations of functional competencies may be applied across positions and occupational families; however, not every functional competency will be relevant to all positions and occupational families. Also, these functional competencies can be mapped to multiple core competencies, including those required for supervisors and managers. Supervisors and managers should identify and communicate the functional competencies required for individual positions to employees, so they may work collaboratively to identify appropriate development activities.
