Our Junior Te Reo Hangarau Matihiko whanau has only two lessons per week, on a Wednesday, for about 9-10 weeks per term, for four terms. So we have about 80 lessons maximum.
We will start with a simple slideshow introducing ourselves, our whanau, our interests / hobbies and mahi. Then we will translate this into a website, which we will learn to code. To help us to learn HTML & CSS we will use w3schools.com and a class on web dev on Code.org
We can add our artwork, such as digital drawing, paintings, video, stop-motion animation to our site to Learn - Create - Share.
Image creation using both Bitmap Raster software like Photoshop and Photopea.com / Pixlr.com Editor.
Using the basics of layers, selection tools (lasso / magic wand) and pen, brush, fill and gradient tools we will choose a 'Maori Design JPG' to make into a poster with colouring-in like comic-book artists.
Use the Stop Motion Animator to record / captures frames of you colouring the black/white line art. Remember you need 12 frames per second.
Tip: try to keep the web cam & paper in the same spot, try taping it down.
Click capture every minute. Remember to save your web video. It will save as a .webm file.
Put it in an animation folder. Upload it into zamzar.com to convert it from .webm to .mp4
You can then upload the .mp4 file to your website folder. Use the code to the right
If this doesn't work, then upload the .mp4 to your school gmail account on Youtube, then share it privately to your own website. Use the <iframe> code to embed it.
Tell your Pepeha with toys / figures to animate with Stop Motion. You can edit your video using Kinemaster
To add your video to your website with the following code:
<video width="320" height="240" controls>
<source src="movie.mp4" type="video/mp4">
Your browser does not support the video tag.
</video>
we will make animations online with Scratch.mit.edu
1) Create a new scratch project and name it the "Task 2 - basics - by YOURNAME"
2) Use the tutorials below to help you a create animation that uses different sprites and background. Start with the animate a character tutorial, think carefully about the order you sequence the blocks. Try and use as many different movements as possible.
3) Share your project and add it to the assignment in Google Forms NhuqzcgJ3itJQY9CA
If you choose a 'Sailing' theme animation / game then you can enter it into the SchoolGen Competition.
Make an interactive animation to celebrate Matariki.
Try to make the stars animate, e.g. glide in, or add music and animation, such as changing costumes to show a 'macarena' dance to go with the song.
Instead of Scratchy the cat you could add a piwakawaka fantail as an ancestor who introduces the app to users.
We will develop our vector art work skills and design our own kowhaiwhai, taniwha, koru.
We will learn the difference between bitmap graphics and vector illustration.
Instead of using Adobe Illustrator, on our Chromebooks we will use

We will learn the basics of how photos images are 'woven' out of a map of bits (bitmap) of on/off picture elements (pixels). From Computational Thinking we will learn how images are made out bits of information (8 binary numbers). We will learn how Binary works and make bracelets and art that have a secret code inside them.
Can you tell the computer the secret to make your woven pattern in black and white. Can you use Loops and IFs (selection) to draw in Scratch Turtle Logo.
Can you design a 4 colour picture and you send it encoded as a message to your partner for them to decode and redraw.
What happens when messages go wrong? Can you solve the mystery of the Card Magic Trick (Parity Check)?
Designing and Developing Digital Outcomes - We will learn 3 styles of 3D modelling:
Block based Voxels - like LEGO / Minecraft - can you build characters
Tinkercad - build complex 3D shapes to build a Whare
SculptGL - carving virtual putty
