DTEC Example of Visual Text
Project 1: Digital Media
We can be creative and flexible with your 2nd Project. There is a natural cross-over with English 1.7 Visual Text / Static image.
If necessary you can gain extra credits by taking a Re-Assessment of DTEC 1.8 Iterative Development of a Digital Outcome.
Print Design Option - 10 credits.
The easiest option would be to learn about 2D Graphic Design Principals and practical skills in Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator. We will then apply these skills to create a poster / static image response. This will gain
3 credits in 1.7 English
4 credits in 1.4 Digital Technology Digital Media skills.
If you show a Design Thinking process in the generation of ideas and trialling fonts / colours / layout etc you can also get bonus 3 credits for 1.2 "Develop a Design"
3D Modelling
Alternatively, you may be more interested in 3D modelling, this could either link in to a Virtual Reality outcome OR your DVC chair design projects. We can support you developing skills in SketchUpForSchools, AutoDesk TinkerCAD or Fusion360. You may prefer Blender if you are interested in Game Development (but this won't work on a Chromebook).
Game Dev
Since Project 1 has over-ran, I do not recommend a time-consuming project like Game Dev. However, if that is your passion and you are committed to put in time at home, then for Game Development you can use Gamefroot.com for a 2D platform game design - whi h will even work well even on a Chromebook. If you have a more powerful PC at home then you may want to experiment with Unreal Engine.
NCEA Level 1 - English 1.7 - Create a Visual Text (Static Image)
Get Inspiration: Research & create a mood board of resources
2D Graphics - Brief 1): English Texts
Using a range of Verbal and Visual Techniques: Create a poster (like the movie posters you analyses) for an English text, like the Poem by Percy Shelly "Ozymandius" or another English text such as the dystopia of The Matrix or another of your poem options:
Poem options:
"The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury
"He walked past the tomb-like houses" Tv zombies
Instructions:
Show quote of one line
Show a image - ccmbine images of themes / images with visual & verbal features:
(Be careful the image is not too literal. For example, see right for how I edited the Pharoah's image in Photoshop to make it look like a 'pop art' style from Andy Warhol. He was famous for his quote about "In the future, Everyone will have 15 minutes of fame". Today, with social media and the internet, viral fame of 'likes' on TikTok seems important at the time but won't last, like the fleeting fame of Ozymandias)
Visual features: colour, symbolism, layout (border, balance, contrast), lettering/font (size, bold, italics), dominant visual image, reverse print etc.
Verbal features: adjectives, alliteration, hyperbole, simile, metaphor, repetition, rhetorical question, imperative, emotive language, quotation etc.

DTEC 1.2 & 1.4: Design Thinking Process
For the 7 credits (DTEC) you need to show 'Design Thinking' Process Steps in a Progress Log.
type out the basic text. Watch these videos for inspiration...
1a) Brainstorm ideas for Language Features: such as imperative, puns, play on words, metaphor, simile, irony, alliteration, rhyme, slogans, use of pronouns, minor sentence, verbal repetition, persuasive language, hyperbole, neologism and testimonial.
1b) Experiment with Design Principals, such as
Layout, hierarchy, alignment and white space.
Typography (font style options. Try out 10+ different fonts.),
Contrast. Pick out the most important words. Use 3 different techniques to make them stand out, e.g. contrast lightness / darkness, contrast warm / cold colours, contrast sizes / weights. Try combining them. Present your 3 best combinations.
Dominant Image / Take Photos, Draw or Pick 3+ images that suit the quote. Remember that you need to respect copyright and have living people's permission to use their likeness. Using user feedback, explain why you have picked your favourite and combine it with the text. Try blending it to avoid a plain background.
1c) Apply a range of Verbal and Visual Techniques
2a) Evaluate them: e.g. Look at the styles of font. Comment of how each font changes (positively / negatively) the perception of the message.
2b) Get feedback from 5+ different people and ask them to comment on the images / fonts and ask them to pick their favourite 3 styles. Collate and present their answers.
Alternative Brief
2D Graphics Brief 2): School Posters
Mr Brailsford and Ms Krohn want you to design inspiring "School Values" posters for display around school.
Manaakitanga – Uplifting and empowering ourselves and others.
Whanaungatanga – Actively building and contributing to positive connections with others.
Rangatiratanga – Developing leadership with confidence, respect, self-determination and teamwork.
Kaitiakitanga – Promoting guardianship and preservation of the school values, learning and the environment.
Use 2D software, such as Photoshop & Illustrator to experiment with the presentation of suitable quotes
E.g. from Aristotle: "We are what we repeatedly do... Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit" taken from Sir Richard Branson's website: virgin.com/branson-family/richard-branson-blog/we-are-what-we-repeatedly-do
E.g. Maori Whakatauki: find a suitable Maori proverb to have the inspiring messages bi-lingually, e.g. "Tama tu tama ora, tama noho tama mate - An active person will remain healthy while a lazy one will become sick"
