6/23/2022 We are at Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park.
This is the best interpretation of the National Park symbol I’ve seen to date!
The Wright Brother’s get the credit for the first powered flight in 1903, but it’s funny how little is said about all the flying they did BEFORE they attached an engine to their aircraft. Here’s the 1902 glider.
Ejection seat is a GO!!!!
Wright Patterson Air Force Base is within sight and still active today.
We were standing almost directly under the landing pattern and were treated to a C-17 flyover!
It only makes sense that these little birds would be aviation enthusiasts as well!
Sunset back at the campground was a good one.
6/25/2022 Lincoln Home in Springfield Illinois.
Pretty remarkable how they, not only preserved the Lincoln home, but one whole block of the neighborhood that he lived in. It gives you a great sense of “being there”.
And of course, there were bunnies. This one had a lovely tick attached to its ear. Yeeeesh!
We moved to the Lincoln grave site and it is a fantastic memorial to one of our great leaders! Very well done and very well maintained.
6/26/2022 We are staying at the Illinois State Fairground in Springfield. This is not our first time staying at a State Fairgrounds, but this one is like no other because there are no other words to describe than “Massive”. According to press material on their website, it is 366 acres and I would have guessed more. Bear and I walked past the poultry building on every walk and it had a special charm when it was lit up at night.
6/27/2022 We have learned that there is going to be a pig show at the fairground in the coming weekend and people are just starting to show up and get set up.
This guy wouldn’t stop “playing” with this zip tie!
Also on the fairgrounds is a 1-mile oval, dirt track….as in, race cars. Today though, there are a couple guys exercising their race horses. I’ve seen pictures and video of these odd (to me) single seat race carriage things, but never seen one in person.
Off to the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
Quite the variety of dresses that Mrs. Lincoln wore to various events.
HUGE painting of the Civil War opening attack on Fort Sumter.
This hallway walks you past a clever digital screen arrangement that makes it appear like there are bunch of floating heads that are arguing the two sides of the emancipation proclamation.
This was an eye opening sight to see….portraits of Lincoln from each year he was in office. The difference in appearance from year one to year five does NOT look like 5 years of aging.
This room was supposed to be an accurate recreation of the room where Lincoln laid in state. I’m not sure what they did, but the room was eerily silent and felt almost too real.
6/28/2022 They do like Abraham Lincoln here in Springfield!
6/28/2022 If you’ve ever done any kind of East-West road trip across the country on I80, there’s a reasonable chance you’re familiar with the truck stop called “Iowa 80”. They lay claim to being the largest truck stop in the world. I’ve stopped a few times over the years, but this will be the first time the whole family has been here. It’s quite a circus, but it’s a fun stop every once in a while. Here’s is some trucker humor out in the parking lot.
The real “prize” when you come here (if you have the time) is the Trucking Museum. You don’t even really have to be into trucks to appreciate the history that is represented under one roof here. Honest to goodness, it’s worth the time.
6/29/2022 Herbert Hoover National Historic Site.
They claim that this piece of acreage that is part of the Historic Site is one of the few places in the Midwest you can see what the mid-west plains ACTUALLY looked like prior to the human agricultural revolution. It’s genuinely beautiful and simply NOT what you think of when you think of the mid-west.
Of course, the corn has a beauty of its own.
7/1/2022 We’ve moved to a new campground on the Iowa/Wisconsin border and I get to see some brand-new snake action!
7/2/2022 We are in a campground called “Spook Cave”. They have this fun little cave on the property that they purposely flood so they can give boat tours of it. Never a dull moment, right?
And they have a bunch of ducks that just love to be human fed!
7/3/2022 Today’s outing has us at Effigy Mounds National Monument.
