4/23/2022 Today we are at The Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic site and for the first time EVER, we have an overnight guest staying with us. Shannon, our good friend and neighbor from back home, is in the area and spending time with us as we explore. The kids affectionately call her “Granny Shanny” because she like to spoil them.

4/24/2022 Just down the road from the Vanderbilt Mansion is FDR’s house and his final resting place (and his Presidential Library, but that’s tomorrow).

His bird collection and the “fun fact” here is that these are from FDR’s childhood and the only way his mom would allow him to shoot and collect the birds was if he did the taxidermy himself. So, that’s what he did!

In his barn where he kept his prized horses and I am fixated on these stall door hinges. They were just fantastic! Details like this are not seen these days!

We’ve seen our fair share of presidential desks, but they are all replicas of desks that are still in use in the white house today. However, FDR had his own desk brought to the White House and then brought back home after his presidency. So, this is _the_ desk he used while in office. This whole room was magnificent. The way the desk was displayed and the way the room was lit made it highlight for me.

Downstairs they have a small portion of his model ship collection and if this is just a small portion, oooooof, that’s one heck of collection because what they are displaying is quite extensive!
