3/1/2019 We've made it to the Atlantic Ocean! YAY! That seems like such a milestone for some reason. It almost certainly isn't, but I like to pretend that it is! We are in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and in the town of Rodanthe, NC if you want me to be super specific! We set up camp just steps from the sand and hit the beach!

This is, literally, the first time Bear has ever seen the ocean. He seemed VERY skeptical!

3/2/2019 It's Grace's Birthday (Well, close enough) and we've surprised her with a horse ride on the beach!

The horse ride was always designed to be just Grace and mom so the rest of us have decided to do one of the most popular things in the Outer Banks, fly a kite. We simply don't have the wind for a 2-line "Stunt" kite back at home, but here? .....on the beach? Oh yes we do! It was quite entertaining!

As far South as you can drive on Hatteras island, on paved roads, is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. It's a small-ish museum, but was fairly engaging. The centerpiece of the museum is the original Fresnel lens from the Hatteras lighthouse. If you've never seen a Fresnel lens in person before, you really should. The amount of work that goes into engineering and building one and then compounding that with the fact that it was built in the 19th century....well, it simply defies logic.....AND OF COURSE I DIDN'T GET ANY DECENT PICTURES OF IT! *sigh*

We actually found a bakery that was open during the off season and they made some FANTASTIC stuff. Grace picked out a a fudge covered piece of cheesecake that is covering a brownie! Yeah, that's NOT terrible!

3/3/2019 Wright Brothers National Monument. This is it. This is where it all began! The birth place of aviation. We all learned a lot here and enjoyed the place very much. Once again, it was super quiet and for that I am thankful. There simply can't be any other time of the year where you could take a picture like this and have NOBODY in the picture!

As part of earning the Junior Ranger badge, they are supposed to run from where the first flight began to where it ended and compare their times to the flight times.

3/6/2019 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Little known fact; this is the tallest lighthouse in the USA. It's the "off season" here in the Outer Banks and doing the actual climb to the top of closed, but it's a sight to behold no matter what.

3/6/2019 Oh Garmin, why must you be SO wrong sometimes?! We were trying to find our way to someone's house and Garmin sends us down this road. This road, as you can see in the picture below, says "Off Road Vehicles Only Beyond This Point". Now, OF COURSE I am going to ignore that! Any reasonable human being is going to simply ignore a sign like that! PRESS ON......yeah, they were pretty serious about that. Now here's the "Fun" part, the road didn't actually go to our destination. It had been blocked off on the other end.....for 10 YEARS! So, we had to come back! We're only smiling in the picture because we made it. I'm pretty sure that Toyota Sienna's were not designed to have wheels off the ground while in motion, but as it turns out, they WILL accommodate that when needed.
3/6/2019 Oh Garmin, why must you be SO wrong sometimes?! We were trying to find our way to someone's house and Garmin sends us down this road. This road, as you can see in the picture below, says "Off Road Vehicles Only Beyond This Point". Now, OF COURSE I am going to ignore that! Any reasonable human being is going to simply ignore a sign like that! PRESS ON......yeah, they were pretty serious about that. This campground has over 400 RV spots available. As you can see, there's wasn't too many other folks around while we were there. Why yes, we WILL take that front row spot right next to the beach!

3/7/2019 We are leaving the Outer Banks. We really enjoyed our stay here, but it had to come to an end. The North Carolina DOT operates a series of ferries to get you up and down the outer banks. They offer transport to all kinds of vehicles, including RVs that are towing minivans, which was VERY convenient for us. We made two crossings on this journey; one took us from Hatteras island to Ocracoke island and the second ride took us from Ocracoke island to Cedar island which basically puts you back on mainland USA. It was so much better than driving back inland to THEN head South. It was really neat and I highly suggest it to anyone making that journey.
