3/5/2022 Ninety Six National Historic Site is a lesser known park in our National Park System and just happens to be along our driving path as we move from Atlanta to South Carolina. It was the site of a Revolutionary War Battle and a unique Star Shaped fort. Not a lot of pictures taken, but it was a worthwhile stop for sure.

3/6/2022 Congaree National Park always makes the list of “Least Visited National Parks”, but we’re so close that it’s hard to ignore. It’s beautiful park and we enjoyed our day there, but I get the distinct impression that you need to be into canoeing and kayaking to REALLY appreciate this place. It’s got to be a magical place to be if you have a boat beneath you.

3/8/2022 The South Carolina State Museum. This museum is built inside an old textile mill. One thing that cannot be ignored while visiting here are the floors. The vast majority of the upper floors are wood planks (and big ones). At one point in time, there would have been rows and rows of large machines that did all the weaving of the textiles that were made here. The interesting part is that A) you can clearly see where the machines were (smooth wood) and also where the workers walked (beat up wood) and B) there are THOUSANDS of these tiny metal rings that got pushed into the wood as they were dropped and then stepped on. They are supposedly rings that guided the threads into the machines and were a consumable part of the process. Sounds dumb on paper, but I found it to be a fascinating part of the journey through the museum.

…..and we are pleasantly surprised by an entire exhibit of telescopes! We’ve never seen anything like this. Not too many places you can go and see so many different kinds of telescopes that spans such a large time period of astronomy.

They had a fun section for optical illusions. Funny thing is, optical illusions are surprisingly hard to photograph. In this one, they are projecting an image (which you can see on the wall) and your job is to wave this white stick up and down fast enough to make the image APPEAR to be complete without there actually being a complete surface for it to project onto. I got close, but I think I should get full credit because I was waving the stick AND trying to photograph it at the same time.
