4/7/2019 Fort McAllister. This is a unique experience for us; we are at this Historic fort that was the site of many battles during the Civil War AND they have camp sites, so we are staying here! Nowhere else on this journey has that even been an option. Upon check-in, they give you a list of activities that are taking place on the campground and low and behold, there is a ranger led “Crater Hike” the next day. It’s called the “Crater Hike” because they take you around the grounds and show you what the craters look like from the cannonball strikes on the earth during the civil war. Really remarkable to see when you consider that they’ve had better than 150 years to fill in.

Our stay has proven to be our first real taste of the heat and humidity in the South. It was 83 degrees today and somewhere in the 85% humidity range. All by itself those factors probably would have been tolerable, but guess what? It’s also Sand Gnat season! What miserable creatures! ….and almost certainly useless to anything in the food chain. I’ve just met them and I hate them! This was taken near the very end of the hike and I was VERY lucky to catch a picture of Grant smiling. Rest assured, he was NOT happy!

Something that we were introduced to back in Charleston was Carpenter Bees. They are NOT something we have back home and at first sight, they are terrifying. They are giant bees that look like they want to hurt you. Some Googling would reveal that they are fairly harmless to humans (unless provoked), but the VISUAL impact is one I will not forget.

After dinner that evening, I caught a glimpse of the sun going down behind the trees. Grace and I headed out to check it out and while we were a few minutes late to see it in its full glory, it was pretty nonetheless. The gnats were THICK though, so I think the rest of the family had the right idea to stay behind.

4/8/2019 Downtown Savannah. We went into downtown Savannah with no real “plan” other than see what Savannah looks like and a few key landmarks to check out. It was a VERY pretty day and we were nowhere near the swamp that surrounds Fort McAllister, so there were ZERO gnats! Yay!

4/11/2019 Fort Pulaski. At the time this place was constructed, it was assumed that it was impenetrable. 11 foot thick, solid brick walls were no match for cannons that were available at the time. Then, as they always do, times changed and weapons improved. This was the first fort to be attacked with rifled cannons and the effects were devastating. The fort was surrounded after just 30 hours of battle and had sustained heavy damage.

Today as a National Monument, the walls have been mostly rebuilt and the grounds are kept in impeccable shape. It was a beautiful day and the Fort was a beautiful place to be.

You can see the still battle-damaged walls around the outside. If you look closely in some places, you can still see some cannon shells embedded in the brick.
