6/18/2019 Carlsbad Caverns. Try as I might, taking pictures in a dark environment with an iPhone just doesn’t work for me. Maybe I am doing something wrong or maybe it’s just the wrong tool for the job, but I just can’t make it work. Mix that fact with the fact that we are in a cave and you end up without a big ole’ pile of nothing…..or nothing good anyway. Here’s a few shots that sort of worked out.

Of course, with all that said, Carlsbad Caverns is just an awesome spectacle. When you go down into the main cave area below the visitor center, it VERY quickly becomes VERY hard to imagine what it was like to be the first person(s) to find this place. Then, to think, that there are many more like it that they have found and mapped. THEN to think that there almost certainly has to be more that simply have not been found yet. It cooks your noodle a tad bit.

6/20/2019 Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. Darn near 400 years ago, some Spanish missionaries thought it would be a good idea to settle in the middle of New Mexico and work with the local Native Americans and, of course, teach them the ways of their religion. In the end, mother nature was not to kind to their crops and tensions between the Spanish and the Native Americans didn’t create a good working relationship. What is left today are 3 sites that contain the ruins of these missions. Despite never leaving central New Mexico to visit all 3 (in fact, they are quite close to one another), they are all quite different

Finally! A Diamondback Rattlesnake! Rangers had been warning us all day about seeing them and I was starting to get disappointed that I hadn’t seen any! Then, I spotted this little guy and it made my day.

6/22/2019 White Rock New Mexico, Overlook Park. We are in the small town of White Rock New Mexico which is essentially a “suburb” of Los Alamos. Great little town with this superb park called “Overlook Park”. Why is it called that……

Another great opportunity to view the Rio Grande river. Although we did have to explain to the kids that the other side of it was NOT Mexico like when we were back in Texas.

……oh and we are camping right next to one of the White Rock/Los Alamos Fire Stations! It would appear that they pull the fire trucks out EVERY day and do system checks. Pretty sure that was a highlight for Grant!

6/23/2019 Bandolier National Monument. What an amazing place! This site was the home to Pueblo Indians who actually carved their homes into the soft rock walls of the canyon. Today, the park offers quite a network of trails to access these sites. This is one of those places that you need several days to _really_ explore…..however, we only have 1, so we’ll make the best of it!
6/23/2019 Bandolier National Monument. What an amazing place! This site was the home to Pueblo Indians who actually carved their homes into the soft rock walls of the canyon. Today, the park offers quite a network of trails to access these sites. This is one of those places that you need several days to _really_ explore…..however, we only have 1, so we’ll make the best of it!

He did NOT like the narrow paths along the high-ish cliff walls.

If you only have a single day to visit this park and you want to get a _good_ feel for how the Pueblo Indians lived in this area, then your best bet is the “Alcove House”. It is a GIANT room that is high up on the side of a cliff wall.
