12/7/2019 Hoover Dam. Yes, this would be our second dam in just as many weeks and we are just fine with that. It was really pretty fun to get to see Glen Canyon and Hoover dam (virtually) back to back like this. All kinds of similarities while at the same time, all kind of differences. One thing is for certain though, Hoover Dam is MUCH more popular!

In the “old days” the road in and out of Boulder City actually took you across the top of the dam. However, it was suggested that post-911 security concerns had people re-thinking that. As a result, a big new beautiful bridge was built that enabled road traffic to cross the canyon without the need for the dam. We crossed it on our way in on “Moving Day” and barely noticed it was there. HOWEVER, on your way in to see Hoover Dam it is IN YOUR FACE as you come round this corner and it is magnificent!

If you’ve been following us this far, I hope you have gathered that Grant is not a big fan of heights. Another nemesis of Grant is the evil, no-good escalator! Escalators are not his friend! ….but I managed a smile out of him for a brief second.

We are about half way up the dam face, looking down the canyon through one of the vent shafts.

We all got a good chuckle out of the fact that half the dam in in Arizona and half of it is in Nevada. Which also means that we are in two different time zones. How do employees report to work “on time”? In which state do they pay state taxes? Really, there are so many questions here!

One of the highlights here is all the Art Deco styling. It was assumed, at the time of construction, that it would be a tourist attraction, so a lot of thought, time and money went into how things looked and the style of the time was Art Deco. It’s everywhere you look and it’s all painstakingly maintained and retains its original beauty very well. I REALLY enjoyed these statues. They reminded me of a hood ornament from a 30’s or 40’s luxury car, but “super-sized”.

12/8/2018 Las Vegas Strip. That’s right, we HAD to give the Vegas Strip at least one shot and if I am being honest, I don’t think 1 day is enough. I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining it was and all the family friendly things that an be done. We did buy any tickets to any shows or anything like that. We just walked up and down the strip seeing the sights and watching free stuff in some of the casinos. The day started at the Bellagio Fountain….
