All curses start somewhere, and it's not always where you expect.Â
With graduation approaching, Ronnie and Magda need to finish writing their spellbook so they can receive the ultimate reward: a place on Grimalkin Academy's honour roll.Â
But when things start to go wrong, it turns out that more than their friendship is on the line, and if Ronnie can't fix it, the consequences won't be worth thinking about.Â

Review: 🌟🌟
Learn how Mona's curse started in this short story that follows her mother's final month at Grimalkin Academy.
Ronnie is super excited to be turning in her senior project with her best friend, Magda. They both dream of making the honor roll, and they know that the jinx they've crafted will get them there. Unfortunately, there's a mix-up that causes Magda's name to not appear on the final list. Ronnie is desperate to fix this error, as she fears she may lose her best friend forever if she can't undo what has been done.
I figured I'd check out the prequel and see if it had me any more excited about this series. To be honest, it cemented the fact that I can just skip this one altogether.
Ronnie definitely has a healthy romance going with her boyfriend, Marshall, but that was about all that I really enjoyed about this one. Marshall cares about her deeply and they are the type of high school sweethearts that you just know are going to get married someday.
Ronnie and Magda's entire kerfuffle is such a petty mess. I can't see why Magda would throw away their entire friendship in a bitter rage of jealousy. It makes even less sense that she's holding on to that grudge over twenty years later. It also sounds like Mona's curse is at least fifty percent her mother's fault, as it sounds like she and Magda created the curse together.
Overall, "Curses Start Somewhere" was a quick read that sheds a small amount of light on Mona's curse in the "Grimalkin Academy: Kittens" series, but that was about it. It includes a sweet romance and a petty friendship squabble, but nothing too substantial. I think my thoughts on this one just confirms that I will indeed not be investing my time into the rest of this series.Â

Things might be easier if I could stop conjuring kittens every time I attempt a spell.
I used to be good at magic. That's how I got into Grimalkin Academy in the first place. Then I was dared by my friends to try a spell way above my abilities.
Now, the end of year exams are coming up, and I need to find a way to stop my magic going haywire all the time or I'm going to fail.
At least matters of my heart are easy enough...for nowÂ

Book one in an urban fantasy series featuring a witchy academy and a low heat poly romance.Â
Mona Black has been struggling with her magic as of late. Every time she casts a spell, she ends up conjuring a kitten instead. On top of the kitty conundrum, Mona also has to grapple with her feelings for her best friend's twin brother, Ryan. As the school year progresses, she finds herself also catching feelings for Caspian and Thomas, too. Is it possible to like all three at the same time? And will she be able to fix her magic before finals?Â
I ended up reading this one for a prompt in a reading challenge in which I had to read a book that takes place at a school. Since I know that Greenwood's books are short and usually to my liking, I decided to give this one a read. Unfortunately, this one wasn't my cup of tea, and I found this story to be too basic for me to really feel engaged.Â
Mona's situation is unique and extremely basic at the same time. I've read dozens of series in which the MCs magic refuses to cooperate; Mona's just happens to come with kittens. I don't think this really add any deep meaning to anything, so I felt a bit let down by the lack of creativity in this one. Grimalkin seems like any other magic school with literally no unique features.Â
I personally found the high school drama in this one to be a tad over the top. Mona has extreme beef with a girl named Ivy for literally no reason. Ivy is definitely the mean girl of the school, and I found her very existence to be petty. The other conflicts in this one revolve around peer pressure at parties and feeling jealous towards different boys, which is just super juvenile and not something I ended up enjoying all that much.Â
I was super confused why there were three different guys all vying for Mona's heart, but upon finishing the book, I see it is labeled as a reverse harem romance, so that at least makes sense now. Ryan is the safe one she's known her entire life. Caspian is the popular kid that makes Mona feels like she belongs at school. Thomas is the nerdy one who is helping her try to fix her magic. All three boys play their own role in Mona's life, though I have my doubts that these three will actually be able to mesh well together.Â
Overall, "First Time's a Charm" was a very basic book featuring a magic school and high school drama. There wasn't anything super unique about it, and I feel the story's entire selling point is kittens, which felt weak to me. I wasn't hooked on the romance with any of the three guys, so there wasn't much pushing this one forward for me. I would be interested to see if this series gets any deeper as it progresses, but I don't think it will be a series that I will actively pursue.Â
