Review: ๐๐๐๐
"Frostt & Kai" was a whirlwind of action that always kept me guessing what was going to happen next. My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest by the end!
I want to start off this review by saying that "Frostt & Kai" is a book that I wouldn't normally read. However, I really enjoyed it despite it being a type of book that was completely new to me. I would describe it as a political thriller, which is something I would never have dreamed of liking, but it really worked for me; let's go over the reasons why.
First and foremost, I really enjoyed the characters. The two protagonists are not afraid of getting dirty and they would one hundred percent beat you up if it would benefit them in some way. Right away, I thought there was no way that I could like Malcolm (Mal) Frostt, because he was moody, seemed a bit psycho, and had no regrets about killing those who got in his way. But upon learning more about him, I saw where he was coming from and realized that he was rather comical and has a soft spot deep down (I know there's some good in there somewhere!). Michaela Kai is the first women president of the United States (go her!) and she is not about to let anything stop her. She is fierce, independent, and willing to do what is the best for her country. Individually, both of these characters are deeply fleshed out individuals with immense backstories. But together? These two become an indestructible team. The banter between the two of them is quite funny, but the tension is also real. Seems like a realistic relationship for the two to have given the circumstances.
Secondly, the writing truly made me feel things. Oftentimes I was disturbed by what the characters were doing, but also could see where they were coming from. Mal is the definition of morally grey, but I still found myself rooting for him in the end. The ending was also so intense that my chest felt like it was going to burst from my heart beating so fast. When I turned the final page, I stifled a groan, knowing that I would have to wait for the next book to be released to see what would happen next.
Lastly, I want to give kudos to the plot. It was so unique, darkly twisted, and it always kept me guessing. I'm sure that those who have read more books similar to this might have connected many of the dots of the mystery faster than I did, but I am new to this, so most everything caught me off-guard. Mal's schemes were always happening left and right, and I never knew what trouble he was going to get himself into. The overarching government conspiracy happening in this story was also nuts, but I don't want to get too into that for fear of spoilers.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If Mal and Michaela wouldn't be so likable, I know I wouldn't have liked it nearly as much. Davis nailed these characters though, so I was totally engrossed. This book was so intense and I can't wait to figure out what happens in the next installment. I am so glad that Davis was willing to send me a copy of this book, otherwise I would never have discovered this series. I will for sure be getting my hands on the next one!
