Midnight & Mince Pies is a prequel to the Falhaven Castle series, a cozy fantasy with a baking dragon, a princess who wants to be in the kitchen over the throne room, and the baker who wants to be there with her. A short holiday novelette that takes place before the events of "Dragons & Dumplings," way back before Nate ever thought of leaving Falhaven Castle.ย
The holiday season is always busy in Falhaven Castle, which means that there are ceremonies to partake in and masquerade balls to attend. The only place that Princess Evie wants to be is in the kitchen baking with her best friend, Nate. Unfortunately, her presence will be missed if she isn't back at the masquerade ball before midnight, so it seems that the clock is ticking on the thing that makes her the happiest in the world.ย
This was a fun holiday short that could act as a great introduction to this world if one happened across it as a cozy Christmas read. I, however, am a huge fan of the "Falhaven Castle" series, so I am already well acquainted with Evie, Nate, Veronica, and the rest of the family.ย
I feel that this story really focused on Evie's autism and her difficulties fitting in with society. Festive times with so many people around can be super overwhelming for those with neurological differences. The lights are too bright, the people are too loud, and the fancy clothes she has to wear are super itchy. All these things put Evie on the verge of a meltdown, and she needs to escape to her happy place before a disaster occurs. I can really relate to this whole experience, despite the fact that I am not a princess living in a fantasy world. Also, the way that Evie has to mask herself in court versus how she acts around her best friend are starkly different, and another thing that people should find relatable.ย
It was super fun seeing Evie and Nate at their youngest that this series has provided thus far. These two are so precious together and their friendship is so darn sweet. They understand each other in a way that most people don't and it's just perfect. I love the segments in which Evie is confused by things that Nate says and rather than freak out at her, Nate always calmly explains how she misunderstood him and what he actually meant to say. Many people don't have the patience to help, but Nate is a great example of how situations such as this should be handled.ย
Overall, "Midnight & Mince Pies" didn't add anything too substantial to this world, but it was fun seeing younger versions of the characters enjoying their holidays together. This one really focuses on the everyday struggles that Evie experiences, many of which I believe many will find immensely relatable. Reading this has me super excited to check out "Custards & Crowns" as soon as I am able to!ย

A princess who wants to bake, a visiting delegation, and a dragon egg in the oven.
Princess Evie loves nothing more than spending the evening baking in the castle's kitchen with her best friend Nate, even if she's supposed to be attending royal functions and meeting ambassadors.
When a foreign delegation visits, Nate manages to get some new recipes for them to try. But that's not all that's new in the kitchen when Evie is gifted a dragon egg and told to keep it in the fire.
Now, dumplings aren't the only thing being made in the kitchen.

A novelette that introduces Falhaven Castle and a princess that loves to bake.ย
Princess Evie tries to be a proper princess, but she wants nothing more than to spend her days baking with her best friend, Nate. When a delegation from Shengda arrives, Evie receives a dragon egg, and she decides that its hearth is going to be the castle kitchen's oven. As Evie and Nate wait for the dragon to hatch, they decide to make a foreign dumpling recipe from the Shengdan envoy.ย
I thought that this is a cute introduction into the "Falhaven Castle" series. I definitely adore the little bit that I know about Evie and Nate; I look forward to reading their happily ever after this fall. I also think that it's neat that Evie is asexual and maybe even neurodivergent. It's cool that she loves to bake and the fact that she's gradually falling for her baker bestie is a pretty cute narrative to follow.ย
I honestly only rated this one so low because I'm not a huge fan of solid baking stories. Reading about people cooking is hard for me to follow and I often lose track of what is happening. I really liked all other aspects of this story though, so I feel that I'll really like the rest of this series.ย
Overall, "Dragons and Dumplings" is a quick introduction to the Falhaven Castle and its many residents. I'm excited to learn more about all the royals in the next installments of this series, and I'll be awaiting Nate's return vigilantly.ย

A cozy romantasy novella featuring an arranged marriage between two royals, swoonworthy love letters, and an ample helping of spice.
Princess Solana of Someil is finally moving in with her betrothed, Prince Arthur of Falhaven. They've only met once, but they feel as though they've spent a lifetime together through all the love letters they have exchanged with one another. But falling in love in person is much different than maintaining a long-distance courtship. With only weeks until the wedding, Arthur will do anything he can to make Solana feel at home in his kingdom.
This is the first novella featuring one of Princess Evie's siblings in the Falhaven Castle series, and the second glimpse we've gotten into this world. I completely adored all of the siblings in "Dragons & Dumplings," so I was very happy to dive into Prince Arthur's happily ever after in this book.
Solana is from a rather conservative kingdom in which princesses are expected to act a certain way and are constantly being chaperoned by their elders. It was really fun seeing Solana come out of her shell once she arrived in Falhaven and was introduced to their more chill ways of existing. I was quite pleased with Solana's character and am happy to add her to the group; I look forward to seeing more of her in future installments!
Arthur has a way with animals and a compassionate heart that he uses to care for others. It was so sweet watching him go the extra mile for Solana's pet cat, Felicia. He is truly a proper gentleman, but also highly adept at picking up just what his girl desires.
Pairing Solana and Arthur together is quite adorable! They are both a bit timid yet super passionate towards one another, so they blend quite well together. The love letters that they write one another are honestly the sweetest. I myself love writing (and receiving) letters penned with love, so I found this to be a great part of the story as well as their romantic relationship.
I must say, this novella is quite heavy on the spice. Usually I prefer my romances to have a little more time before the steamy scenes start, but if you are a fan of open door romances that get right down to business, I'm sure this will fit nicely into your reading taste. None of the scenes made me uncomfortable in any way, though, meaning that I found them to be done quite tastefully despite the fast nature of Solana and Arthur's physical relationship.
Overall, "Love Letters & Lemon Drops" is a cozy romantasy novella with lovable characters, a sweet romance, and plenty of animal companions. It can easily be read in a single sitting, which makes it a perfect read for those crunched on time. I already had an attachment to the world and characters going into this one, but it would also make a great introduction to the series. I look forward to all the future installments taking place in Falhaven Castle and seeing my favorite characters grace the page once more!ย

A blossoming romance is explored in this series starter that features an ace heroine!ย
Evie may be a princess of Falhaven, but she would rather spend her time baking in the kitchen then overseeing her kingdom's need. When her best friend, Nate, returns after five years away, she knows that they have to catch up in all things baking. Evie and Nate used to spend every day baking together before Nate was transferred to work as a chef in a different castle. With Nate back in Falhaven, Evie begins to realize that she may just have feelings for him. But with Nate leaving in a few short days, how can she tell him how she really feels?ย
It was really fun to step back into Falhaven Castle and check back in with all these characters I've come to love. Despite this being the first official book in the series, two books have already been released prior to this one. I honestly feel that this book would struggle immensely as a stand alone, but if you combined "Dragons & Dumplings" and "Princesses & Pastries" into a single book, this story has a great starting potential.ย
Evie is such a strong main character. She is asexual and autistic, so she runs in a different circle than most people. These attributes have her often feeling like an outsider, but her family tries her hardest to meet her needs. Evie doesn't like it when her food touches, hates the feel of certain textures, and is easily bothered by materials that her fancy dresses are made out of. All these details among other things lead me to believe that she is on the autism spectrum, and I find it so cool to see this identity represented in an 1800s inspired fantasy world. Being asexual is another huge part of Evie's identity that has her questioning her true feelings for Nate and experiencing attraction in a different way than many people. I find Evie to be a very relatable main character, so it is always a joy to follow her journey.
Nothing terribly exciting happens during the course of this book, but I am a big fan of the characters and this world, so I still think highly of this short novel. However, the only major thing that occurs is the further development of Evie and Nate's relationship. If you've read the prequel novella, this book is truly more of the same, but it does have me very excited to read book two now that Evie and Nate's relationship has the potential to actually go somewhere.
Overall, "Princesses & Pastries" is another fun installment in the "Falhaven" universe. It was so great seeing all the familiar faces in this book and seeing how they have grown over the last few years since we've encountered them. This is such a cozy, feel good story about a young princess coming to terms with her emotions surrounding her best friend. I am super ecstatic to see how Evie and Nate's relationship develops in future installments of this series! They will be such a cute couple, and I'm looking forward to seeing them together as more than friends.ย

The second installment in the "Falhaven Castle" series in which Evie and Nate continue to grapple with their romantic feelings for one another.ย
With Nate being back at Falhaven Castle for good, Evie knows that she'll have to confess her feelings for him sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, her older sister Kathryn has fallen ill, which means that Evie will have to act as the head princess in her stead. This means that she has less time to spend with Nate in the kitchens. It's hard enough trying to tell him how she feels at the best of times, but can she really risk their friendship when life feels so chaotic?ย
I am a huge fan of the "Falhaven Castle" series so I've been anxiously waiting for book two to release for quite some time. This installment was so cute, but it ended all too soon which had me a tad frustrated.ย
This book is mostly made up of Evie and Nate both trying to be brave enough to tell the other how they feel. They both drop hints about liking one another, but neither wants to assume anything about their best friend that they don't know to be true. Confessing one's feelings is hard enough but having to do it to your childhood best friend that you've known for eighteen years would be so difficult. Evie and Nate are so cute together that I've been patiently rooting for them to finally get together for this entire series.ย
Having to see Evie balance even more royal responsibilities in this one was different. She isn't the heir to the throne, so she usually doesn't have to do all that much, but unfortunately her older sister falls ill, and she has to work hands on with royal delegations from other kingdoms in this book. She handles things with poise for the most part, but her feelings for Nate are already getting in the way, so I'm interested to see how their relationship will affect future events.ย
This book also talks a ton about having sexual relationships and being asexual. Evie is impartial to sex but is willing to have it, which means that she is sex positive asexual. Nate is demisexual, meaning that he doesn't feel attraction to someone unless he knows them on a deep emotional level. I relate to both of their mentalities on relationships and sex, so this is a really refreshing romance to read about. It isn't often that I see ace representation in fantasy, especially in ones as cozy and cute as this, so I absolutely adore these two's relationship. I'm super excited to see how their thoughts evolve and shift as they explore their newfound relationship.
I was extremely frustrated that this book ended how it did. I was so excited to see that Evie and Nate were finally going to talk through their feelings with one another, but that didn't happen before the end of this book! The ending really sets up the conflict for book three, but I am desperate to see these two get together for realsies, so I'll be over here desperately waiting for book three. I love this series, but I wish the books would be longer.ย
Overall, "Custards & Crowns" was another adorable addition to the "Falhaven Castle" series. I am absolutely obsessed with Evie and Nate's relationship, so it was so cute seeing them struggle with their feelings for one another. I need more kissing from these two ASAP and will desperately be waiting for book three. The ace and autism rep is one of my favorite parts of these books; Evie is just the sweetest!ย
