Review: 🌟🌟

A quirky monster romance novella set in a world where superheroes and supervillains are very much real. 

Jill is a Mashie. After an evil supervillain released a weapon to eliminate half the people on Earth by mushing them with another human being, some people were merged with animals instead. In Jill's case she was mashed with a goat she was milking. Now, she is constantly looked at with disgust in her every day life. That is, until Liam walks into the coffee shop she works at. It seems that Jill still has a chance at love despite the horns on her head...

I am a sucker for saytrs, goat people, and honestly, even demons with horns. So this obviously means I was intrigued when I saw this novella hit my feed. After seeing it around a few more times and learning that I have the chance to meet the author in person, I figured I'd give it a go. 

I'll start this off by saying that this book caught me off guard many times. I wasn't expecting the whole Mash-Up plot nor the superhero element, so the world this story is set in is definitely unique. I figured it was just going to be a cozy fantasy world with mythical beings, but it's more of a sci-fi setup. I actually give this one points for the semi-cheesy superhero stuff, because at least it's different. 

This one is definitely too instalove for me. Liam and Jill see each other and are instantly hooked. After a manner of only days, they are telling each other they love one another and rearranging their lives, which is just bizarre. 

The part in which I really fell off the wagon and began disliking this one is when the second half of the book turned entirely into spicy scenes. I know that relationships move fast in novellas, but like dang, these two go at it so many times for the book only being one hundred pages long. Also, dirty talk still makes me uncomfortable. No shame, just not my cup of tea. 

The last few chapters definitely needed a time jump label. One second Jill is walking into her apartment to get her stuff and when one turns the page, a significant amount of time had passed. It took me a minute to readjust and figure out what was happening and by that point, the story was pretty much over. 

What I did really like about this one is how it portrays hate towards the Mashies. People are inexplicably rude towards these individuals that have been merged with animals, and it reflects racism in our world quite nicely. I also thought it was interesting that Jill thought herself unromanceable after everything that happened. My boyfriend and I have discussed in the past if he'd still love me if I was a blank, but this book brings up the question whether one's loved ones would still view the person the same if they were merged with an animal. 

Overall, "Goat Girl" unfortunately did not meet my expectations. I was hoping for a really sweet monster romance, but this one was driven by instalove and ultimately led to near fifty pages of smut. I can't say I'm all that surprised, but I was a tad disappointed.

There is a summary of the first book in the series at the start of Poison Princess which makes this a standalone story; however, as with all series, it's best if you read Goat Girl as well.
