A short story that introduces the Elkwater Music Camp and the cryptid creatures that reside within its woods.Â
Mac swears that there is a creature lurking in the woods at Elkwater Music Camp. It is her final night at camp for the year and she is determined to find out what it is. When her saxophone playing lures a mysterious cryptid out of the woods, Mac’s curiosity—among other things—are certainly satisfied.
I’ve been eyeing the “Camp Cryptids” series for a while now, because satyrs are awesome, and it isn’t often that one comes across them, even in the monster romance genre. I found this short story as a freebie, and I figure I can use it to surmise if I want to try to pursue the main books or not.Â
Unfortunately, this one ended up being one extended sex scene and nothing else. I’m not saying I’m opposed to a saytr x human relationship, but I wish there would have been any emotional connection between these two before they went at it. Also, Mac decides to give up quite a bit for the chance to rekindle this bond with her cryptid lover, even though they really don’t know each other. This always weirds me out, but I know some people are super romantic and tend to hope for the best.Â
I’m hoping that a full length novel would expand on a relationship quite a bit more than this short story, so I may still give book one a chance. Satyrs/fauns are so few and far between that I may have to give this one a go even though I didn’t particularly enjoy this short story prequel. And you never know, maybe book one will flesh out Mac and Ramble’s relationship a tad more.Â
Overall, I found myself disappointed with “This One Time at Band Camp.” It was unfortunately nothing more than a glorified sex scene between two strangers. Despite this, I am intrigued by the idea of Elkwater Music Camp, as it is a summer camp for monsters and humans alike, which is something that sounds like a blast to me. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a music camp either. I think I may have to check out book one if I have the time because I’m so intrigued by this concept, but I’d be going in with much more caution now that I’ve read this short story.Â

Thirteen years ago, Jessica fell in love with a wolven boy … or so she thought. When the last night of band camp resulted in a surprise litter of wolven pups, she was heartbroken when her summer love vanished, leaving her alone to raise their human-wolven kids.
Determined and dedicated, Jessica has done everything she can to ensure they grow up as part of the human and inhuman communities, including sending them to Elkwater Music Camp, where their father, Aksel, has been an instructor for the last twelve years.
~
When bloodlines and alliances run thin, Aksel, the last eligible male of the Sköllburg Pack, is tasked by his foster father with mating outside their territory to strengthen the sparse wolven numbers. There’s only one problem: Aksel is a one-woman wolven, and he’s spent the last thirteen years pining after Jessica, the girl who got away.
Focused on his work as the local high school’s band instructor and his summer job as the Marching Band Director at Elkwater Music Camp, Aksel has almost managed to forget his lost love until the day he catches a familiar scent on four of his newest students.
Shifting Hearts, a wolf shifter paranormal romance, is book two in the Camp Cryptid series. Each book takes place in and around Elkwater Music Camp and features different relationships among the camp staff and their neighbors in the surrounding hills.
