Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school... again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.
Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp.
Suddenly, mythical creatures seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. The gods of Mount Olympus, he's coming to realize, are very much alive in the 21st-century. And worse, he's angered a few of them: Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.
Now Percy has just 10 days to find and return Zeus's stolen property, and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. On a daring road trip from their summer camp in New York to the gates of the Underworld in Los Angeles, Percy and his friends, one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena, will face a host of enemies determined to stop them. To succeed in his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of failure and betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

How does one even begin a review to a book that means so much to them? Let's just say, much of my childhood was consumed by the Riordanverse and my family's copy of "The Lightning Thief" is very battered and bruised.Â
"Percy Jackson" is an iconic series, and one that I find myself returning to again and again. The first book in the series has a bit of a slow start, but it brims with life through Percy's sassy narration and the imaginative ways that classic Greek myths are retold. As a child or adult, it is hard not to smile at all the things that Percy, Annabeth, and Grover get up to on their epic quest.Â
Speaking of this iconic trio, how can one not love them? Percy is a sarcastic, often rash, and always hilarious young lad who is quite literally one of the most iconic and beloved characters in all of children's literature. Annabeth is the brains of the bunch, who is also quite stubborn and struggles to sees things other people's way. Grover is the lovable foody and the most precious goat boy this world has ever seen. Together, you have three best friends who make the perfect dream team for saving the world.Â
Yes, like many others, I am rereading this series in anticipation of the TV series. Season two is about to air in a little over a week and I am absolutely ecstatic. As it goes, it was so nostalgic and wholesome to revisit one of my childhood favorites while also comparing and contrasting it to season one of the Percy Jackson television series. And I'm reading it at the same time as my boyfriend (we got to get this man up to speed; he missed out on Percy in his youth), so that makes it especially fun.Â
I could talk about what this book means to me forever, but I fear those are details that none of you truly need to know. Let me just say, the "Percy Jackson" series and the Riordanverse in general is a fantastic place to escape into and if you are looking for a series to get reluctant readers into reading, this is a great one to go to. I know I'm not the only one who loves this fandom, but I am so blessed that I get to enjoy such wonderful books along so many devoted readers.Â

After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson-a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any "normal" friends.
But things don't stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia-only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name the Bermuda Triangle.
Now Percy and his friends-Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson-must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family-one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.
