Although Northwestern University "officially" took a neutral stance in the controversy over the pro tennis tournament, there were a number of connections between Northwestern and Ameritech, the corporation that sponsored the tourney, making it difficult to achieve the appearance of neutrality.
In 1992, Ameritech awarded Northwestern a $1.5 million grant to endow a chair in information technology. The grant came as an addition to an ongoing program at N.U, supported by Ameritech, to advance telecommunications science and management. It was the largest ever made by the Ameritech Foundation.
Ameritech's C.E.O. and chairman Richard C. Notebaert was a trustee of Northwestern University.
